Greening Cities need our voice 🌿🏙️ The Urban Agenda for the EU works with a new multi-level method which key delivery mechanism is the system of Thematic Partnerships, including representatives from various governmental levels and stakeholders. #GreeningCities Draft Action Plan 🔝   In total 5 actions will help the partnership reach their objective of increasing #Green #Infrastructure in urban areas🌳 Let's zoom in on two Actions!   Action 2️⃣ : Indicator System for Evaluating Urban Nature Plans 🌿 The Action will develop an indicator system that promotes comparability across EU Member States and local authorities to measure and monitor progress towards urban greening. It will include several thematic areas of assessment, a set of common mandatory and voluntary indicators, and will outline the methodology for their measurement. ➡ Currently, there's no standardized way to measure and compare urban greening efforts, making it hard to track progress and implement policies effectively. ➡ This project aims to fill that gap, supporting better policy decisions and enhancing urban biodiversity 🏙 🦋 Action 3️⃣ : Reaching Meaningful Urban Greening Targets 🌿 Urban areas are losing green spaces, essential for climate adaptation, biodiversity, and citizen well-being. The #EUBiodiversityStrategy and the proposed #NatureRestorationLaw highlight the need for urban greening, but many local authorities lack cohesive approaches and effective implementation strategies. It is designed to analyse the current state, the challenges cities face, how these challenges fit within the EU and national contexts, and the barriers that need to be overcome to advance the topic of a Water Sensitive City. The legislative proposal aims at restoring at least 20% of the EU's land and 20% of sea areas by 2030, and all ecosystems in need of restoration by 2050.   🏡 When it comes to urban ecosystems, CEMR supported a flexible approach considering local specificities to enhance the development of urban green spaces.   🎯 Member states must ensure no net loss in the total national area of urban green space and of urban tree canopy cover by the end of 2030 (with exemptions for cities with extensive green space coverage). INDUSTRY NEWS // Queensland Gov Launches $20M Green Urban Infrastructure Initiative The Green Urban Infrastructure Initiative is in response to the continuous growth within Southeast Queensland resulting in an increased impact on climate change. The area is predicted to grow rapidly from a current population of four million to six million by the year 2046. Council-driven plans of action that the initiative will support include, the promotion of healthy living through urban design, improvement of urban biodiversity and the increase in access to active transport with green features. Simultaneously, the initiative will target a specific area of concern, the urban heat island effect; an environmental crisis that involves the rise of temperatures in highly populated areas.
