On the one hand, New Towns are a marvel, but on the other, we simply must re-invest in our existing towns and infrastructure. It makes so much more economic sense to retrofit and refurbish existing buildings and high streets than it does to carve new towns out of fields (brown, grey, or green doesn't matter). The embodied carbon sitting in derelict buildings is a ticking time bomb...we need to bring those buildings back to life now, before they are so delapidated there is no choice but to knock them down. Every person reading this post will immediately know of an abandoned or under-used building near them that could, with a bit of imagination, be brought back into use. Where is the #PresumptionOfRetrofit and #DontWasteBuildings ethos? I want to envision better spaces and to revitalise our communities, rather than ignoring them and moving on to the next new shiny thing. Let's #RetrofitOneMillionHomes and then maybe we move on to new builds!

Have a read of my #blog following #IWC69 where Katie Hunter and I were representing whales and dolphins, for Whale and Dolphin Conservation! "Almost 80 years ago, in a room in Washington, DC that was likely smelling slightly musty, a group of privileged men gathered around a piece of paper and signed it. This ‘International Convention for the Regulation of #Whaling’ was established in 1946 when whale populations were drastically declining and something had to be done to stop their uncontrolled slaughter. Basic principles were agreed and the INTERNATIONAL WHALING COMMISSION (IWC) was founded to oversee the delivery of this brand-new convention. Since then, the Commission's task has been to ensure ‘The proper #conservation and development of #whale stocks and to safeguard these important natural resources for future generations.’ The fact that entire populations of sentient, intelligent marine mammals are still referred to as ‘stocks’ and ‘resources’ by the IWC is part of the problem and needs to be addressed urgently. While the convention was signed by men whose views were shaped well over a century ago, some IWC member states still cling to those formulations as if they were the founding principles of an untouchable industry. The world has changed. We know so much more about these gentle giants than ever before. Killing them for profit is so far removed from what we should be doing in 2024, it’s absurd that the IWC still even considers this a possibility. We’ve just returned from the 69th meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC), where Katie Hunter and Ed Goodall helped influence key decisions to protect whales from commercial #whaling. 💪 Alongside Norwegian #NGO #NOAH, we hosted a side event showing governments shocking footage of #Iceland and #Norway’s whaling.
