The Freshwater Challenge is a country-led initiative that aims to support, integrate and accelerate the restoration of 300,000 km of degraded rivers and 350 million hectares of degraded wetlands by 2030, as well as conserve priority freshwater ecosystems. 46 countries have joined. The Freshwater Challenge supports alignment and integration of freshwater ecosystems across national plans to deliver global goals on climate, water, disaster risk reduction, sustainable development and biodiversity – including Target 2 and Target 3 of the GBF. #Mangrove ecosystems are critical for food, livelihoods, biodiversity, and climate. Join us next week at #COP29 at an event that will highlight how including mangrove-positive targets in countries' Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) can be an important catalyst to mobilize action and finance for mangrove conservation and restoration, and further enhance mitigation contributions. Through a moderated panel discussion composed of diverse mangrove stakeholders, attendees will learn about new and ongoing initiatives to implement and mobilize mangrove-climate action and finance. 🌍📢 We are thrilled to announce the release of the updated IUCN Red List of Ecosystems Guidelines (v 2.0)! The IUCN Red List of Ecosystems is the global standard for ecosystem risk assessment, providing a framework for monitoring the health of our world’s ecosystems. It supports conservation, resource use, and management decisions by identifying ecosystems most at risk of biodiversity loss 🌿🔍 The guidelines have been extensively updated by an international team of RLE specialists, incorporating major enhancements for a more rigorous application of the Red List criteria. The new version includes detailed technical advice on assessing ecosystem degradation under criteria C and D, new sections on risks related to climate change and ecosystem fragmentation, and much more. Find the new version of the guidelines here: https://lnkd.in/eXXzWSCh #RedListOfEcosystems #IUCN #RLEassessment #Conservation

Water scarcity and dangerous floods are growing problems, while the wildlife and ecosystems most connected to water are the most endangered on Earth. Society's needs for fresh water will increasingly come into conflict with endangered species conservation in a water-scarce future. Check out my new preprint on Human-Environment Water Conflict and the sort of interdisciplinary thinking that can help us prepare for this growing conservation problem. #water #preprint #publication #conservation #wildlife #biodiversity #environment #waterscarcity #waterdiplomacy #interdisciplinary #research #ecology

The EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 sets out a commitment to legally protect a minimum of 30 % of the land, including inland waters, and 30 % of the sea in the Union, of which at least one third should be under strict protection. The guidance developed by the Commission highlights that maintenance and restoration efforts are likely to be required for most of habitats and species. The guidance further emphasizes that those restoration efforts primarily need to be planned, implemented and coordinated at national or regional levels and that, in selecting and prioritizing the species and habitats to be improved by 2030, synergies with other Union and international targets, in particular environmental or climate policy targets, are to be sought. The up-scaling and out-scaling mechanisms are investigated under the Green Deal EU-funded REST-COAST project which primarily aims at demonstrating that upscaled coastal restoration can provide a low carbon footprint solution to #climate adaptation and disaster risk #reduction for threatened coastal systems, combined with gains in their biodiversity. The week-long event not only provided the participants the opportunity to share updates, knowledge and ideas for future implementation of #restoration actions, but also provided room for intense networking and discussing collaborations on scientific level and beyond. fantastic new paper out about meaningful progress toward 30x30 and how policymakers must prioritize creating and sustaining well managed, well regulated, and well designed marine protected areas
Excited to finally see this paper in the wild! While marine protected areas (MPAs) have the potential to provide substantial benefits to nature and people, our analysis indicates that much of the current MPA coverage lacks the implementation, regulation, and management needed to truly protect marine ecosystems. For meaningful progress toward 30x30, policymakers must prioritize creating and sustaining well-designed and managed MPAs with robust regulations capable of driving positive changes for biodiversity. I'm putting up some recent examples of projects we've been involved with during the last year, featuring the front cover and an image with an example of a standout piece of information that we found fascinating. Did you know freshwaters mussels can live up to 100 years and how essential they are in maintaining water quality - blimey! mind blowing. Designing and managing protected and conserved areas to support inland water ecosystems and biodiversity. This report, launched on hashtag #30x30 Action Day at hashtag #COP16, is IUCN WCPA’s first-ever guidance focused on inland water ecosystems and the biodiversity that depends on them. As the hashtag #GBF calls for the inclusion of inland water in the target to conserve 30% of the planet by 2030, this report provides guidance in employing protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures to benefit these critical ecosystems. 📄 The full report, produced by the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA), The Nature Conservancy, WWF, IUCN SSC Freshwater Conservation Committee and Equilibrium Research, is now available: https://lnkd.in/eNsSjssN

In the UK specifically, Natural England's 2024-2025 Action Plan sets ambitious targets to improve biodiversity, protect species, and restore habitats. Key initiatives include enhancing the condition of Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) and Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), as well as reintroducing species like the hen harrier and beaver. The plan also emphasizes expanding accessible green spaces and ensuring nature recovery contributes to local socio-economic benefits. This resonates with the dissertation I'm undertaking entitled "Beaver Reintroduction and Their Effect on Water Quality Parameters". #WildlifeConservation #Biodiversity #SustainableFuture https://lnkd.in/eA3BMjx5
