#InternationalYouthDay Our founder, Saubhagya Raizada, will be at the 'Youth Sabha 2047: Shaping India's Future' today organised by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) and the United Nations Foundation. He will represent Minerva Impact and our work on sustainable food consumption, working in the closed-door breakout sessions to discuss the 'Future of Food' and explore ‘giant leap’ scenarios for India's agriculture-led livelihoods, climate and health. The group will envision the future of India’s Food System, brainstorm the national agenda to get there, and explore the youth’s role in this transformation. These insights would help to align the 2030 Agenda and India's 2047 vision, and will enable active future planning and youth inclusion in decision-making. The infographic on individual countries' current consumption patterns, posted by WWF, has appeared in my feed a few times over the past few days. At the outset, India’s current consumption patterns appear promising and could set an example for the rest of the world. However, it’s essential to look critically at these figures, particularly since WWF hasn’t detailed the specific “consumption patterns” it evaluated to reach this conclusion. While it’s widely recognized that Western food consumption patterns are unsustainable, there is also an alarming prevalence of malnutrition in developing countries like India. This raises an important question: what exactly is India’s food consumption pattern, and what makes it sustainable? On one side, we see the rapidly growing, hyper-convenient culture of doorstep groceries and takeaways in metro cities; on the other, there’s the modest consumption of the broader population, which may seem sustainable yet in many cases, perpetuates a nutrition-related poverty trap. Does the low carbon footprint of the majority offset the higher impact of urban consumers? If so, is India’s dietary pattern genuinely sustainable, or is it simply constrained by necessity? The latter is not a viable long-term solution, particularly with India’s projected GDP growth. Kindness among creatures…in sweltering Bikaner, Rajasthan, where temperatures reached up to 50 degrees C this week, an endangered chinkara foal is shielded from the sun by a peacock. Meanwhile, various State governments are all issuing heat wave alerts across Delhi, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana as tens of millions of people suffer acute water shortage and labourers, farm workers are being felled like flies due to severe heatstroke. Agricultural worker productivity directly underpins all other worker productivity, given the health and nutritional links. Between India’s rotting fruit and vegetables (recent Bloomberg article articluates the financial toll this is taking) and the fast vanishing perennial rivers, the key question is not “How much does agriculture contribute to India’s GDP?” (How reductionist and anachronistic is that?!) It is - what is every stakeholder in every sector doing to get all hands on deck to prevent the further cascading of ecosystem tipping points? Percentages, GDP, all irrelevant when in the farm to fork journey, there’s nothing to stick your fork into. However, it is only at that burning house point, when nature degradation becomes a politically pertinent issue - when water wars break out (as they have been in south India), when multiple crop failures lead to spiralling inflation and food security, national resilience issues. Then the party that promises basic provisions like clean, safe, plentiful drinking water and staples, will catapult to power. Powerful corporate lobbies who push against planetary boundaries are likely to see their licence to operate come into question, if they aren’t better stewards of land and water. Because it will become political. What happens to the land and water, happens to us. Our fates are inextricably intertwined. The good news is- if we leave nature alone and stop pumping forever chemicals into waterways, using intensive ag techniques that destroy soil health, deforesting land etc., nature will heal. And only then, so will we. Mr. Takayuki Hagiwara, FAO Representative in India FAOIndia , highlighted India's pivotal role as the world's largest milk producer, attributing this success to transformative initiatives like 'Operation Flood.' Addressing challenges, he underscored sustainability and climate change as critical concerns, stressing the need for tailored solutions due to India's diverse landscape. Mr. Hagiwara recommended scaling up fodder production to bolster India's dairy industry. He also advocated for climate-resilient feed sources that minimise land and water dependence, suggesting repurposing food waste. Addressing health issues, he emphasized protecting dairy herds from diseases like lumpy skin disease and influenza. On behalf of FAO, he reaffirmed its steadfast support for India's dairy sector, pledging to enhance sustainability through capacity building, technical assistance, and international cooperation.
