The #Virginia Clean Economy Act (VCEA) mandates top utilities in the Commonwealth to move to 100% #CleanEnergy by 2050. To fuel our economy and meet this goal, we must pursue a regional approach to #transmission planning, build new transmission lines, and upgrade the existing grid with grid-enhancing technologies (GETs). There’s a lot to do here, but the payoff is huge! Check this out. https://hubs.ly/Q02Blr760

I am thrilled to share that my paper, "Integrating the Energy Flexibility of Cold Climate Air Source Heat Pump in Home Energy Management Systems," was published at the 2024 Conference on Innovative Smart Grid Technologies, North America (ISGT NA 2024) held in Washington, DC. In this paper, we propose a model for the energy flexibility of cold climate air source heat pumps (ccASHPs) during both heating and cooling seasons. Our model ensures customer comfort within the desired temperature range while optimizing energy flexibility through a linear programming approach. This model is integrated into home energy management systems, demonstrating a reduction in heating and cooling electricity consumption by 7% and 11%, respectively, without compromising comfort. Thank you to my advisor and colleague who supported this work. Looking forward to further advancements in smart grid technologies! If we want any hope to increase electric capacity to allow for the economy of the future and decarbonize our grid, we need to significantly expand the transmission system. But siting, permitting, approving and building new transmission is incredibly hard...... Luckily there are low-hanging fruits out there. We can reconductor existing lines and use other grid enhancing technologies to squeeze more juice from the existing system. There are perverse incentives in place that discourage utilities from taking this route, but we are finally taking steps to address this issue. Let's get 'er done! https://lnkd.in/djrTwcXY

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is moving as quickly as possible to solidify guidance around Dynamic Line Ratings. Instead of ambient adjusted ratings, which are based on weather modeling, DLRs use sensors to measure real-time temperature, wind speed, and line tension directly on transmission lines. "Dynamic line ratings are one of the most cost-effective tools we have for getting more out of our existing power grid infrastructure," said Caitlin Marquis, managing director at Advanced Energy United. Maximizing and expanding the US power grid is vital for electrification and climate mitigation efforts. FERC is accepting comments on the possible DLR regulatory framework: https://hubs.li/Q02Jjrk90 #FERC #SolarPolicy #Electrification #KinectSolar https://hubs.li/Q02Jjnb-0

Throwback Thursday: Tim Lieuwen moderated a panel discussion on the role of microgrids in our energy future. Panelists included Andrea Pinabell, Sustainability Executive, author, and speaker; Abbey Roy of Southern Company; Dennis McGinn former Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Energy, Installations and Environment (retired) United States Navy; Rich Simmons, Director of Research and Studies EPICenter. What do you feel are the biggest barriers to the wide adoption of microgrids in our energy infrastructure? What needs to be done to move a decentralized version of our energy infrastructure into the mainstream? Watch the webinar below for more information on microgrids, and comment below with your thoughts on these questions. #microgrid #microgrids #energy #energysecurity #energysector https://lnkd.in/eBpKKhpy

The U.S. electric grid must be expanded and made more reliable for future energy demands and climate forecasts! ➡️To date, transmission has been siloed and planned for the short term. ➡️As a result, today we suffer from reliability and capacity issues. ➡️This won't work for the next century. Can we make changes to our electric grid to allow it to serve our vision of a decarbonized future at the speed we need? We need multiple solutions to address climate change and to complete the energy transition. We need more #renewableenergy, such as #solarpower-- but we also need a better #electricgrid. At #PopularPower, we're focused on decarbonizing our energy infrastructur by helping solar companies deploy more kilowatts-- faster. Expand your knowledge and learn about what's going on with our electric grid by listening to this podcast from Climate One.
