As the end of the year approaches, legal recruiters often hear from attorneys that they are hesitant to switch law firms prior to January. HOWEVER, making a lateral move in Q4 can actually be a great idea. Why, you ask? Many reasons! 1. Law firms certainly don't stop hiring just because it's the end of the year. Hiring needs are needs, not wants! 2. Everyone else is feeling the same hesitation, so if you apply to open roles in Q4, you'll likely face less competition than in Q1, when all those other attorneys start searching the market again. 3. If you're worried about leaving behind a year-end bonus, many firms will compensate you for that bonus to entice you to join them sooner. So you needn't necessarily leave money on the table. 4. By holding back in Q4, you might miss out on outstanding opportunities that will already be filled by the time Q1 arrives! 5. Getting in touch with a recruiter NOW will ensure that you are already set up for a maximally effective search at the start of Q1, even if we don't immediately catch traction with your search in Q4. They CAN'T answer questions. 4. What little information they give you DOES NOT stand up to scrutiny. 5. They aren't working for QED Legal LLP If you're prepared to put your career in someone's hands, make sure it's the right person. I studied 50 fractional General Counsels. Here’s what I uncovered: - 𝟱𝟬 use the title "Fractional General Counsel." - 𝟯𝟱 have 𝒛𝒆𝒓𝒐 prior in-house General Counsel experience. - 𝟭𝟱 have prior General Counsel experience: ↳ 𝗦𝗶𝘅 with less than five years of experience. ↳ 𝗘𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 with two years or less. ↳ 𝗢𝗻𝗲 with ten years of experience. - 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 have experience with more than one company. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆: Not all Fractional GCs are equal. Titles don’t tell the whole story. Experience does. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗚𝗖? Ask the tough questions. Dig into their background. Don’t settle for a title—demand real expertise.
