You are right. With digital marketing, most of the things are trackable. Website visits, followers, impressions, sources of traffic, time spent on site, and more. I am a big fan of tracking because it helps you improve, optimize, and do course corrections as needed. But… It is always a good idea to look at softer qualitative aspects that may not be obviously visible but make a humongous impact. For instance – When you meet people in the offline world, do they tell you that they are reading your posts on LinkedIn? Has the quality of people applying for open positions in your organization improved? When you talk to the prospects, do they tell you that they have heard about your company before? When you attend an event, do people say, “Oh, you are the one posting on Twitter”? Do your employees wholeheartedly engage with the content posted on the company handles because they are proud of their association with the company? Are more relevant people visiting your booth at an exhibition? Do your prospects perceive you as a “premium brand”? Do your customers feel confident about recommending your brand to others? Digital brand building is more nuanced than what is measurable quantitatively. Visits, likes, and followers don’t tell the whole story. After switching to digital marketing, I spent a lot more time on platforms like LinkedIn and Instagram, but I focused more on LinkedIn since its where professionals hangout. At first, I was all about growing my connections, sending requests to everyone and accepting all requests too. But soon, I realized that bigger numbers didn’t mean better engagement. Most of my connections weren’t interacting with my posts, and I started wondering-what’s the point of building connections if they aren’t engaging? Yesterday, I attended a workshop on the Power of Personal Branding, and during the session, someone asked the same question I had: ‘Should I accept all LinkedIn requests?’ The guest Aswathy Ushus gave a clear answer ‘NO, our algorithm changes, and we missed some engaging connections'. This is true. An increased number never gives value connection, can hurt your engagement because the algorithm misses the people who really matter.
