This week, we have been celebrating National Hedgerow Week, organised by the Tree Council. 🌳 The unsung heroes of our landscapes, here are just some of the benefits planting hedgerows can provide: - Hedgerows provide essential habitats for wildlife, including birds, insects, and small mammals, supporting biodiversity in urban and rural areas alike.🐛🐦 - They act as natural windbreaks, helping to reduce wind erosion and create microclimates, this can be particularly beneficial in Scotland's varied landscape.🌳 - Hedgerows also serve as corridors for wildlife, allowing species to move safely between fragmented habitats, aiding in conservation efforts and maintaining genetic diversity.🦔 At Elsoms Trees, we're passionate about supporting initiatives like National Hedgerow Week. That's why we offer a variety of hedgerow mixes tailored to suit any location. We work with you to ensure your project receives the correct mix of species. Some of our favorite species for hedges include Blackthorn, Rose, Green Beech, and Hornbeam. Its resilience in various soil types and ability to tolerate coastal conditions make it a great choice for many locations. 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Verra’s review re-examined eight years of the project’s work and independent audits, and found no non-conformities to their standards, which reinforces what our due diligence has shown all along: the project delivers exceptional benefits for both conservation and communities in an exceptionally challenging operating environment. The actions for further strengthening SCRP noted in Wildlife Alliance’s reports to Verra reflect continuous improvements that Wildlife Alliance has already implemented or is currently implementing. We stress that these improvements are above and beyond the requirements of Verra’s standards and are built upon recommendations that emerged from the project’s ongoing consultation with communities. SCRP has always complied with VCS, CCBS and SD VISta; the project is now exceeding them.   But despite the project’s proven impact and integrity, after more than a year on hold SCRP faces an uncertain future. This puts at risk the survival of the Southern Cardamom rainforest, the survival of the 62 globally threatened species the project protects, and the well-being of 29 local and Indigenous communities who rely on SCRP for funding to provide safe drinking water, improve food security, and for healthcare and education. Most importantly, the project has overwhelming support from these communities; in recent FPIC (Free, Prior and Informed Consent) meetings 93% of community members voted in favour of the project. Therefore, we remain steadfast in our commitment to SCRP and the communities it serves. With the hold now lifted, we will do all we can to support Wildlife Alliance and secure urgently needed investment for the project – to fund community development, protect biodiversity, and reduce global emissions by conserving an irreplaceable forest ecosystem under constant threat. 🚨Bath Spa University present at the South African Wildlife Management Association conference 🌍🦒 Sian Sullivan, Professor of Environment and Culture, has been to Windhoek, Namibia, to give a presentation at the South African Wildlife Management Association conference, hosted by the Giraffe Conservation Foundation.     The conference theme is ‘Thinking Big: Landscape Level and Transboundary Perspectives on Southern African Conservation’.  Sian has co-presented with her University of Namibia colleague, Professor Selma Lendelvo. Their accepted paper is entitled ‘Etosha Pan to the Skeleton Coast: How conservation histories and cultural heritage concerns may inform the landscape approach in north-west Namibia’.    Wildlife management in Southern Africa faces major challenges including habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and climate change. Tackling these issues requires a landscape-level approach that integrates ecological, social, and economic factors. By combining strategies like habitat restoration, community engagement, and adaptive management, this approach aims to conserve wildlife and their habitats while also supporting local livelihoods. From bird baths to rocks, here are seven things people put in their gardens to help wildlife, and how well they work. What animals are using your backyard? And what backyard features entice wildlife to visit? These are the questions a group of researchers from The University of Western Australia, Perth NRM and 243 citizen scientists from 30 towns and cities in southwestern Australia set out to answer. We chatted with lead researcher, Dr Bronte Van Helden, about what they found. Broadwater Lake Latest News! 💧 The planning application to build a new Watersports Facility and Activity Centre at Broadwater Lake is NOT on the Hillingdon Council Planning Committee Agenda for 14 March as originally planned. We wonder why? Is it because: 👎 By approving the development, Hillingdon Council would be failing in its statutory duty to conserve and enhance biodiversity ❌ Intensive watersports cannot successfully coexist with nature on a lake the size of Broadwater Lake, and that the case sets a damaging precedent for other SSSIs across the UK. 🚨 Many biodiversity impacts have been underplayed or discounted in order to justify a finding of no adverse effects on the SSSI.
