Small freshwater habitats can be overlooked, despite their importance to wildlife. Ponds, ditches, headwater streams & more support endangered species from Water Vole to Starfruit. It's time to prioritise these habitats as part of efforts to restore nature. In our latest blog, Freshwater Habitats Trust sets out why these habitats should be integrated into Local Nature Recovery Strategies. This would redress long term neglect, & start restoring small freshwaters to their former glory. https://lnkd.in/eETbQtvM

Preserving habitats for wildlife is vital for maintaining the balance of the forest ecosystem. That's why our foresters are trained to identify habitats like eagle nests on our land. When an eagle nest is identified, we establish buffer zones to ensure their safety and preservation. This is one way we are actively contributing to the health of our forest ecosystems. 🦅 Learn more about our efforts to safeguard eagle nests and protect wildlife in our forests: https://hubs.ly/Q02qDcms0 #nationalwildlifeweek

Here's an illustration of the ecological communities found at BkCs Schmidt Meadow Preserve in Jackson. As you can see, the preserve contains several acres of floodplain forest. These unique forests are important because they serve as wildlife corridors between habitats. They also reduce flooding and excessive siltation downstream. If you want to learn more about our Schmidt Meadow Preserve, contact us at BkC@battenkillconservancy.org.

As we transition from the summer to autumn, it becomes imperative to ready our gardens for the changing season while also considering the wildlife that relies on them. Clearing debris is essential, but creating a welcoming habitat for these creatures is equally important. By offering various food sources and shelter options, we can actively support garden wildlife throughout the autumn months. These efforts not only benefit the wildlife within our gardens but also play a crucial role in maintaining a flourishing ecosystem. #WildlifeConservation #GardenHabitatEnhancement.

🎥 Witness the return of an iconic species in Sweden's rivers! 🌊🐟 For the first time, the critically endangered Atlantic sturgeon has been reintroduced in Sweden. The release in the #GötaRiver marked a crucial step in bringing back this iconic species after a century of absence. Supported by our European Wildlife Comeback Fund, the "Return of the Sturgeon" initiative released 100 juvenile sturgeon, taking the first step toward restoring healthy, self-sustaining populations in their native habitats. This reintroduction is a collaboration between Swedish and German partners, working together to boost biodiversity and strengthen the resilience of freshwater ecosystems.💧💪 #AtlanticSturgeon are vital to river ecosystems. By disturbing riverbeds, they enhance oxygen levels and create spawning areas for other fish. They also help manage invasive species, supporting the overall health of the aquatic food web. Watch the video to follow their journey and learn why these efforts are so important 👉 https://lnkd.in/eNkQUUPN 🎥 Jon A. Way to go Caltrans there are huge possibilities using the existing culverts that are present already with lower cost and significant uptake for wildlife to use these structures.#wildlifeconnectivity #roadecology #reducingroadkill
Caltrans is part of California Wildlife Reconnected! This powerful partnership is uniting public and private efforts to create more wildlife crossings across our state. These lifelines reconnect habitats, allowing wildlife to safely cross our roads and helping to preserve California’s remarkable biodiversity. As part of Governor Gavin Newsom’s bold 30x30 initiative, these crossings are essential for the future of California’s natural treasures. By supporting this initiative, Caltrans is helping to protect the habitats that make California home to so many extraordinary species. 🐾 Stay tuned for more updates on the road trip coming soon!
