“I am a strong supporter of harm reduction because I have seen it save and transform people’s lives,” said Dr. Anne Durcan, family physician who specializes in addictions support. At its core, harm reduction is about meeting patients ‘where they at are at’ in their readiness to make health-behaviour changes. As an evidence-based approach, harm reduction includes a broad spectrum of interventions depending on the goals of the person. Whether they want to continue drug use, contemplate change, or to stop use, there are tools and approaches to reduce the harm of drug use and improve the health and well-being of the person using drugs. This week is Manitoba Substance Use and Addictions Awareness Week, an opportunity for Manitobans from all walks of life to engage in meaningful discussions and explore solutions for addressing the harms caused by substance use and addictions. Welcome to National Addictions Awareness Week (NAAW) 2024. From November 24–30, we’re joining the Can Centre on Substance Use and Addiction / Centre can sur les dépendances et l’usage de substances (CCSA) to shine a light on addiction, reduce stigma, and build understanding. This year’s theme, Forging Connections, highlights the importance of coming together—whether as individuals, families, or entire communities—to support prevention, harm reduction, treatment, and recovery. Forging Connections also reminds us that addiction often hits closer to home than we think, because everyone is #SomeonesSomeone. By recognizing our shared connections, we can create a stronger, more compassionate network of support for those impacted by substance use and behavioural dependen. When we come together, we all play a part in making a difference. #NAAW2024
