📅 Today, June 15th, marks a day of celebration and recognition for the incredible women in the mining industry. It's International Day of Women in Mining, and it's not just another day on the calendar. It's an exciting day that highlights the progress and potential of women in this traditionally male-dominated field. 👷♀️✨ But let's be clear, this day is not just about women. It's about women leading in a new paradigm. 🚀 It's about celebrating the hard work and determination of those who have paved the way for us, and acknowledging the challenges still ahead. 💪 One of the most pressing challenges facing the mining industry is the looming skills gap. 📉 As technology evolves and the industry shifts towards more sustainable practices, the demand for skilled workers is only going to increase. And this is where women come in. 👩💼 By actively promoting and supporting women in mining, we can tap into a vast pool of talent, filling critical positions and driving growth. 📈 Women bring unique perspectives, skills, and experiences to the table, making them a valuable asset to any mining team. 🌟 So today, let's celebrate the women in mining, past, present, and future. Let's continue to break barriers, shatter stereotypes, and build a more inclusive and diverse industry. 🌐 Happy International Day of Women in Mining! 🎉👷♀️ #WomenInMining #InternationalDayOfWomenInMining #MiningIndustry #DiversityAndInclusion #WomenInLeadership #DiverseWorkforce

A weekend of inspiring & powerful posts marking International Day of Women in Mining by so many women who are transforming our industry. The theme, "I am Mining and I Belong" to me was both a recognition, maybe a small celebration even, on how far we have come in my 40 years, but also a challenge. As I've become more engaged with Women In Mining serving as a committee member and now also a board member for the WIM Denver chapter, there are occasions where I am the only man “in the room”. I’ve got to tell you it feels a little odd at first, but I quickly realized this is how every woman in the industry has felt in some form or fashion although I was never never made to feel like I did not belong or unwelcome. But that is one of the privileges of being male in a male dominated industry. I’ve never had to think – to declare and affirm that “I belong”. It was always just accepted. We could, if we chose, flip the switch on much that leads to a sense of not belonging. We could fix the signage, the language in policies & procedures, that is gender specific and exclusionary. We could realize that PPE designed for men is not suitable for women. Maybe it is not be too much to hope for that we could be truly welcoming of women in all facets of our industry & recognize the incredible value they bring. But so long as women are less than 20% of our industry, that odd feeling of being “the only woman in the room” is inevitably likely to persist. And that is not something we can flip a switch and change tomorrow, or even next year. It is probably generational change, but we have to be dedicated to bringing that change about. Seeing comments on not being a real miner and so not fully belonging and seeing the response from IWIM and others reinforcing the sense of belonging to women “who work in, around and with the mining industry”, my thoughts gravitated to my wife Joy who is a truly amazing woman about to embark in a new role as a school principal. She probably should have been in this role 10 years ago but she as much as I embodies mining and belongs in this industry. All of us, women or men, know the incredible demands mining places on a partner, knows what it is to have someone keeping the home functioning when we left for work at 4:30 in the morning, or do not get home until late at night, to manage the demands of shift work, remote (FIFO) work, or seemingly endless work being gone or working through weekends to get the job done. The demands of making a new home when the job required another relocation. For now, at least while less than 20% of the mining workforce are women, it has been primarily women who in fact represent more than 80% of this amazing and talented contingent and without whom, so many men like myself could not have accomplished what we have. It is as much our partner’s accomplishment as ours, and often on top of all those other things they did as a de facto single parent, they were also building a career. #IDWIM2024 #IamMiningandIBelong

On 18 June 2024, Marampa Mines Limited (MML) joined the global community in observing International Day of Women in Mining, an annual global campaign that honours the incredible achievements of women and their advancement and inclusion in mining. We collectively and individually celebrated MML’s continuous commitment toward diversity and gender parity. We hosted engaging activities, including a panel discussion on the theme “I am Mining and I Belong,” where colleagues shared personal stories to inspire others. The day was filled with fun, recognition of outstanding women, cultural dance displays, and a live art station with images depicting the roles and positions of women in the mining industry today. Towards the end of 2023, MML surpassed its 30% target for female representation among direct employees, reaching 34%, a remarkable milestone. This commitment to a minimum 30% female headcount also extended to our contractors. Continuing to develop women at all levels in our workforce underpins our determination to prioritise diversity, equality and building a strong workforce in an industry where a more diverse range of perspectives and skills can contribute to raising productivity, innovation, safety, resilience and making a positive impact. Thank you to everyone who participated and made this day unforgettable. MML is determined to continue leading the way in championing diversity and inclusion in mining. #womeninmining #IDWIM2024 #diversity #communities #womeninmetals #ironore #MarampaBlue #metalsmerchant

I really can’t wait to join in the celebrations for the 2024 International Day of Women in Mining (IDWIM) and moderate a panel on “Breaking Ground in Belonging”. Today “belonging” is one of the biggest buzzwords - and we now know it is the highest predictor of employee engagement, job satisfaction and motivation for talent. Forcing employees to change behaviours that misalign with their authentic selves is one way for companies to see increased absenteeism, turnover, poor attraction, and ultimately less productivity. An authentic culture of belonging in the workplace matters because it impacts business performance and employee well-being. Belonging is vital for bringing out the best of everyone at work. So as the market for top talent continues to tighten in the mining industry, more and more leaders have asked whether they’ve done everything they can to help foster a culture where all employees, including those from diverse backgrounds, feel a sense of belonging. Please join us at IWiM as we share insights and seek to delve into this critical topic

Research from S&P Global shows that companies with women board members have an average profit margin 23% higher than the top 100 mining companies. Yet, women still make up only 15% of the total mining workforce. Additionally, underrepresented groups - whether by gender, sexual orientation, race, or religion – are more likely to experience harmful behaviours such as discrimination, harassment, and violence. With the energy transition driving higher demand for minerals and metals, our industry must take bold steps to foster inclusive, respectful, and safe workplaces. Eliminating harmful behaviours is essential for retaining the talent needed to meet the increase in demand for metals critical to a low carbon future. Last week, ICMM took a significant step toward creating more inclusive mining workplaces by setting a collective goal to establish industry benchmarks for gender representation and equality as well as six practical tools to support the integration of DEI practices and policies and a roadmap, which sets the vision for an inclusive mining sector and provides actionable steps to drive the change needed.
