We want to be the ones they turn to when they’re worried, scared, excited, or even when they’ve made a mistake. Dispelling Myths and Championing Authentic Allyship for Persons with Disabilities A narrative has been circulating online about superstar, Chris Brown allegedly refunding a fan with a disability for her ticket and meet-and-greet fees, and additionally giving her $10,000. While this story showcases a touching act of generosity, it's important to clarify that it is not accurate. The fan in question has come forward to correct the record and advocate for people with disabilities, emphasizing that while the intentions behind sharing such stories are often good, they can sometimes reflect ableism and performative allyship. In her statement, she expresses appreciation for Chris Brown treating her with the same respect as any other fan, without special treatment due to her disability. She addresses a common ableist misconception—that people with disabilities cannot afford their lifestyles or need charity. Contrary to these assumptions, she works hard to fund her own experiences and is able travel to attend concerts. This situation highlights the need for critical thinking before sharing stories online, recognizing that even well-intentioned shares can perpetuate stereotypes and inadvertently spread misinformation. Let’s strive for authenticity in our allyship and respect the agency and abilities of individuals with disabilities, rather than casting them as subjects of charity. At Embrace, we advocate for disabled people of all ages, often in meetings with schools, social care, health, and housing. Too often, disabled people are blamed for the challenges they face—whether it's a child in class or someone in debt. While personal responsibility matters, approaching problems with understanding, not blame, leads to real solutions. I found my old school report recently, where at 12, I was labelled unmotivated and disruptive. For years, I felt frustrated with myself for being unproductive, but blame didn’t fix anything—understanding did. I don’t remember receiving that report, but I do remember throwing later ones out of the bus window. Safe to say, criticism didn’t help then, and it doesn’t help now. If you work with people, before labelling ‘negative’ behaviour, think about the causes. Often, like me, some people don’t even realise they need support. Helping someone understand that can save years of self-doubt and frustration.

Keep your relationships with youth positive and remember that your relationships are more important than youths’ compliance with your demands. Avoid getting into power struggles by asking yourself, “Do I really need this person to do what I say right now?” If there is not an immediate safety issue, take a deep breath and step back. Sometimes youth just need a moment to figure out what they want or need in order to move forward.
