NEWS - International Student Education, Melbourne Australia Sad news today - Victorian Coroner releases findings after an inquest into multiple drownings in a single incident at Port Phillip Island, Victoria Australia. The visitors were from India, and had not made themselves aware of local hazards. --- Swimmers urged to exercise caution this summer Swimmers are urged to exercise caution this summer after a coroner found four international visitors became stuck in a rip and drowned in a state’s worst beach tragedy in nearly two decades. Reema Sondhi, 42, her 23-year-old nephew Jagjeet Singh Anand, 20-year-old niece Kirti Bedi, and 20-year-old family friend Suhani Anand all died at Victoria’s Forrest Caves Beach on 24 January. They were visiting Phillip Island for a family day trip and were part of a group of nine with relatives from India. But Sondhi, Singh Anand and Bedi would never make it home as they were pulled unconscious from the water and died on the beach. Anand died in hospital the next day. Coroner Sarah Gebert found all four had drowned after being caught in a rip, in findings released on Thursday. Signs at the beach’s entrance had general warnings including, “No Lifesaving Service”, “Dangerous Currents”, and “Submerged Objects” and were clearly displayed and visible on the day, lead investigator Sergeant Leigh Cole said. But he noted there were no provisions to translate the messages into foreign languages. Other group members later told police that they did not notice any warning signs. Gebert said education, safety and water awareness “is paramount” to prevent more fatal drownings this summer. It appears that in many cases, including this coronial investigation, clear signage warning of risks alone is inadequate. He implored the Victorian community and visitors to our state to be aware of the risks of Australian beaches and take precaution where needed. --- #australia #internationalstudent #internationalstudentsaustralia #students #marketing #education #careers #internationalstudenteducation #BestStudentCities #internationalstudents #worlduniranking #QSWUR #studymelbourne #MelbMoment #MelbourneUniversity #MonashUniversity #TimesHigherEducation #worlduniversityrankings ⁴ᴷ International Students What Needs To Change? WATER SAFETY - What needs to change? | Recent multiple drowning tragedies have left the Indian-Australian community reeling. These tragic events naturally have an effect on not just Indian International Students but all International Students - whether in Melbourne or other locations across Australia. Water Safety is critical to the health and safety of so many international students while they study in Australia. Late 2023, Wise Words Media attended presentation by Victorian Emergency Services. Presented in partnership with Study Melbourne, Life Saving Victoria and Victoria Police - topics included: * Australia has unique and potentially dangerous waterways • Many students arrive in Australia with limited or no water safety knowledge and swimming ability • While studying in Australia, students are likely to take trips to waterways – it is crucial they know how to be safe Speaking specifically to the topic of water safety in late 2023, Life Saving Victoria presented valuable, expert insights into their vital guide and helpful information. It's reassuring to again see all Melbourne universities working so proactively in partnership with Victorian Emergency Services to help educate not just Indian International Students but all International Students. Safety around water is dynamic knowledge Australians are instilled with throughout their early years. It's great to see evidence of the work being done to promote and generate this for all International Students. Content developed by Life Saving Victoria, distributed and promoted by Study Melbourne. This week is Estranged Students Solidarity Week 2024 run by EaCES, the Estranged and Care Experienced Students network in higher education. Whitney Goodman, LMFT at Calling Home addresses clearly the difference between family distance and estrangement in her YouTube video 'Family Distance Is Not The Same As Family Estrangement' She explains that the fundamental difference between low contact relationships and estrangement lies in the intentionality and permanence of the separation. When a person chooses estrangement they make a deliberate decision to end the relationship, often permanently, because of negative experiences, unresolved conflicts or a threat to emotional wellbeing. People in low contact relationships rarely describe themselves as estranged. Instead they may say that they are not in close contact or they don't talk. There is less emotional weight and permanence attached. Well worth a watch: https://lnkd.in/efjnmNBC #EstrangedStudentsSolidarityWeek #ESSW

Casual Relief Teachers are the extraordinary support that steps in when permanent teachers provide excursions and education outside the classroom. Relief Teaching for some is a choice and others a stage in their career, however it doesn’t need to mean the rich experiences and viewpoints from learning outside the classroom can’t be applied in their toolkits. We encourage all teachers to read the latest publication from EducationHQ to get ideas from Australian school excursions, camps, and incursions and apply them to subjects and class content to spark passion and engagement. Bring life experience and culture into the classroom and if you do decide to transition from a TRT to a permanent role, you are well versed in the real experiences you can tailor into the curriculum. #TeachingResources #SwitchEducation #EducationHQ
