Rural urgent care has accounted for 26% of net rooftop growth this year, outpacing suburban and urban trade areas by over 40%. In fact, #ruralhealth areas account for 18.5% of the nation's #urgentcare rooftops, up from 4.1% when I first wrote "Rural and Tertiary Markets: The Next Urgent Care Frontier" in 2019. When you open an urgent care in a rural area, you're often providing a service that was previously unavailable, particularly to #Medicaid populations. Adding something to the community is perhaps why we see many rural urgent cares stabilize (hit mature volumes) within 8 months. By contrast, if patients in a crowded suburban trade area must be intercepted or won over from competing practices, stabilization can take as long as 24-36 months. Growth is being led by #privateequity backed operators like Fast Pace Health, MainStreet Family Care, Xpress Wellness Urgent Care, Community Care Partners, and ConvenientMD...among others. Check out my comprehensive update in the December, 2024 JUCM: Journal of Urgent Care Medicine.

Many #hospitals are in a state of financial distress, faced with economic, demographic, and technological forces that challenge the adequacy of the traditional hospital. In a new blog, Ken Kaufman discusses his recent introduction to Scott Keller, who has worked to shape and implement a creative and workable path forward for communities that may be facing a potential #hospitalclosure. Ken references Scott’s thinking about an approach that can help shift the conversation from the binary do-or-don’t close to a thoughtful consideration of what it means to deliver #healthcare in a setting that has difficulty supporting a particular hospital. #healthcaremanagement https://lnkd.in/dRuvBrxa

Access to care in rural communities continues to shrink. Utilizing a digital care platform like Actuvi can allow specialties, primary care, RHCs and FQHCs to expand their geographic constraints and increase access to care. Additionally, Actuvi allows them to deploy preventative health measures like RTM and RPM along with other digital care services. #prevenativehealthcare #healthtech #digitalcare

What happens to our communities when their lifeline is severed? Rural, independent, and solo community hospitals are that lifeline for many. Here's what you need to know. Rural, independent, and solo community hospitals (RISCHs) might just be the unsung heroes of the U.S. healthcare system. Let's talk about why they're crucial and what we can do to ensure they continue to thrive. 1️⃣ 𝐂𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐆𝐚𝐩: → These hospitals are often the first and sometimes the only point of contact for more than 60 million Americans living in rural and emerging suburban areas. → They provide essential services like emergency care, routine checkups, and chronic disease management. → Imagine living hours away from the nearest healthcare facility—these hospitals bridge that gap. 2️⃣ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐬𝐡 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: → More than 1 in 3 rural, independent, and solo community hospitals are at risk of closure. → Since 2010, over 140 rural hospitals have shut their doors, more than 700 are at risk, more than 360 are at immediate risk of closure. 3️⃣ 𝐀𝐧 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞: → RISCHs are economic engines and social cornerstones in their communities. → Healthcare delivery supports 1 in 8 U.S. jobs, and this impact is even more pronounced in rural and emerging suburban areas, where hospitals often function as the largest local employer. → These hospitals drive infrastructure investment and boost other business investment. 4️⃣ 𝐀 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞: → Every American deserves access to quality healthcare, no matter where they live. → By taking action, we ensure a healthier, more sustainable future for all communities. 5️⃣ 𝐀𝐧 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐞: 🔹 RISCHs face significant financial, workforce, and technological disparities. 🔹 These hospitals face disparate demographic challenges as their patients are often older, sicker, less affluent, experience higher rates of chronic illness, and have limited access to preventative care. 🔹 They face significant barriers including limited funding, shortage of technical expertise, and limited internal capacity and capability for innovation. 💬 What steps can we take to support rural and emerging suburban healthcare? I'd love to hear your thoughts. Share your ideas below. #healthcareinnovation #ruralhospitals #communityhospitals #RISCH

***RURAL HOSPITAL CLOSURES DEVASTATE COMMUNITIES*** Rural hospital closures continue to devastate communities, as highlighted in a recent KFF Health News article. The story of Jellico, Tennessee, where the hospital closure left residents with no local healthcare and an economic void, underscores the urgent need for sustainable solutions. The closure of rural hospitals not only disrupts healthcare access but also cripples local economies, leading to job losses and shuttered businesses. Innovative repurposing of hospital buildings, like in Somerville and McKenzie, Tennessee, can help mitigate some of these impacts, but it's not a one-size-fits-all solution. At Dynamis Advisors, our sole purpose is the design and creation of Healthy Villages®, which are community-centered, sustainable, and economically attainable alternatives to hospital closures. Healthy Villages® provide essential healthcare services tailored to the unique needs of each community. By integrating health services with local resources and fostering community engagement, these community hubs ensure continuous access to care while stimulating local economies. This innovative approach not only addresses immediate healthcare needs but also promotes long-term community well-being and resilience. The health and vitality of rural communities depend on our ability to adapt and innovate. Let's continue to push for sustainable, community-centered solutions to ensure everyone has access to the healthcare they need. #RuralHealth #HealthcareAccess #CommunityImpact #HealthEquity #SustainableSolutions https://lnkd.in/dpMtwTE3

Last Friday was a great day - I got to be part of the celebration of the opening of the Edenbridge Memorial Health Centre. The centre was developed by gbpartnerships for Kent Community NHS Foundation Trust and sees the Trust's community services housed alongside the Edenbridge Medical Practice. As ever, you always learn new things by touring a finished project with the people who are now using it. A random selection of takeaways for me: The importance of building flexibility - whilst it only opened its doors late last year the Trust has already made a couple of alterations to the building to allow them to deliver new/different services. The steel frame building really helps with this, allowing for internal reconfiguration more easily. The benefits of co-locating staff - the offices on the first floor house both Trust and GP staff. These teams used to have to call each other tens of times a day to liaise on patient information, wasting time on missed calls etc. Those conversations now happen in the shared office increasing the teams' productivity. New, fit-for-purpose building benefits for staff - recruitment and retention is way easier for the Trust and GP practice now that they have a building that is light, comfortable, accessible and allows staff to do their jobs better. The importance of landscape - the beautiful memorial garden is a key feature of the project which welcomes staff and visitors at the entrance. Combined with a courtyard, bat boxes, bird boxes, and a host of other habitat features it makes the external realm something that staff and patients will want to spend time in and will really benefit from. Public kudos is definitely due to: Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust for their approach to true partnership working; LSI Architects for a high quality and extremely successful design; Galliford Try for completing the project on time, to budget with exceptional after care for the new occupants whilst delivering significant social value benefits ...and gbpartnerships very own Marc Kerridge and Ian Tuddenham who have gone above and beyond to ensure the project was a success. 👏 👏 👏 I can talk about this project ad-nauseum - check out the case study linked below and feel free to contact me if you'd like to know more.
🍾 At the end of last week we had the pleasure of coming together with patients, volunteers, local residents and NHS partners to celebrate the official opening of the new Edenbridge Memorial Health Centre. 💙After more than seven years of planning, engagement and construction, the centre, which combines a GP surgery, children’s services, diagnostic services, a wellbeing centre and a wide range of outpatient clinics, welcomed its first patients last November. 🏗️ gbpartnerships develop acted as development partners to Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust in the build and Galliford Try were the construction partners. 💙The new health centre is already making a huge difference to patients and staff, including Mick Gilbert-Brown who has Parkinson’s and cut the opening ribbon. Mick visits the wellbeing centre every week. Mick's wife Jennifer said: “I think this place is wonderful. Mick comes to the day centre every Monday to socialise.” 🗨️ Hugh Robinson, Group Business Development Director, gbp group, who attended the opening event said: "We are incredibly proud to have successfully completed the new Edenbridge Memorial Health Centre on schedule and to see this important facility for the local community officially open. Developments such as this come about by strong partnership working and lots of hard work, and Edenbridge Memorial Health Centre is a great example of innovative partnership working between the NHS, gbpartnerships and Galliford Try. This modern, purpose-built health centre is improving access to a wide range of services for local people in a low energy, low carbon building that is helping KCHFT meet its sustainable care ambition. The building uses no fossil fuels to heat it and photo voltaic panels producing renewable energy on site. I applaud and thank the whole team at Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust and at Galliford Try for their tenacity in reaching this major milestone.” We hope that the this amazing facility and will deliver quality care for generations to come.
