How Getting Food Poisoning from a Popular Fast Food Burger Joint Taught Me About System Security! Last week, a popular fast food burger joint betrayed me. One seemingly harmless burger later, and I was in bed battling E. coli, food poisoning, and constant sprints to the toilet that rivaled a marathon. But, like any good IT professional, I found the parallels to system security in my gastrointestinal chaos. - Unexpected vulnerabilities: Just like that burger blindsided me, security flaws can pop up when you least expect it. Both leave you running—one to the toilet, the other to patch your servers. - Detection matters: Early detection is crucial—whether it’s noticing the first stomach rumble or spotting a system breach, the faster you react, the less messy things get. - Recovery plans: My recovery involved electrolytes, regret, and lots of bathroom breaks. Your systems? Hopefully, a solid backup strategy and fewer trips to 'emergency mode.' When I was younger, we had a rotating weekly meal plan otherwise known as “a food timetable.” Mondays were my least favorite, as I usually had spaghetti with mixed vegetables (didn’t care much for pasta then). In contrast, I anticipated Sunday dinners, which included fried rice with chicken and plantain or salad—a delightful combination of carbs and vegetables that I preferred. Everyone at home was expected to eat the prepared meals, but I soon grew weary of the routine and wanted to grow up quickly so that I could eat what I wanted, when I wanted. Now (fully in my “adulting” phase), I understand the importance of meal plans. They offer a healthy and balanced diet, eliminate the stress of deciding what to cook, simplify grocery shopping, and foster family bonding. Quite similarly, a good governance structure is like an effective meal plan: * Good nutrition ~ Good cyber hygiene * Great family bonding time ~ Cohesion across the firm’s security landscape, eliminating siloed operations. * Simplified and straightforward grocery shopping ~ Reduced overheads, more cost effective security operations with maximum benefit realisation. * Absence of meal prep anxiety ~ Increased productivity as security works in tandem with the business, enabling the achievement of objectives. Ultimately, a healthy meal is to the body what good security governance is to the organisation. #GRC #governance #cybersecurity
