#realestate 🍇 September in Portugal is the time of grape harvesting, and with it comes an increased interest in homes in the country’s wine regions. 🌿 🔹 Along the Douro River, one of the most famous wine-producing areas, vineyards are scattered across the hills, where they make the renowned port wines and the increasingly popular rosé. This region is also known for its valleys and villages where winemaking traditions are passed down from generation to generation. 🔹 In Alentejo, a vast and hot region in the south of the country, vineyards stretch across plains and hills. Fresh white wines with citrus notes and strong reds are produced here. The winemaking estates in this region are known for their long harvesting seasons, which can extend into early winter. 🔹 On the island of Madeira, winemaking is deeply connected with the history of the region. In places like Câmara de Lobos and São Vicente, grape varieties are grown for the production of the famous Vinho Madeira. 🔹 In Algarve, known for its beaches, there are also wine estates that produce wines reflecting the Mediterranean climate of the region. https://lnkd.in/dPEP7_8Z

CNN Portugal has come to ODE Winery and Casa Relvas to report on the growing trend of single varietal grapes in Portugal: "In Portugal, there are many ways to order wine. First, we choose whether we want white, red, or rosé. Then, we specify one of the 14 wine regions that make up the country. Examples: 'I’d like a white from Alentejo,' or 'I’d like a red from Dão.' The type of grape used is generally not a major point of discussion. However, outside of Portugal, the tradition is different. Anglo-Saxons, for example, have long been accustomed to ordering wine by the grape variety. They go to a bar and ask for a Cabernet Sauvignon, a Sauvignon Blanc, or a Syrah. It’s the grape variety that guides their choice of wine. (...) This trend is also gaining traction among wine enthusiasts in Portugal. 'The Portuguese are now beginning to discover the specific characteristics of grape varieties. We have a restaurant where many customers come specifically to try Arinto, Fernão-Pires, Touriga Nacional. It’s starting to happen quite often' says [ODE Winery winemaker] Maria Vicente." Douro 1/5 - Metamorfose, Marcos Pombalinos e Marcos Temporais. Douro 1/5 - Metamorphosis, Pombaline Landmarks and Temporal Markings. EN 1756 - Douro, the "oldest" demarcated and regulated wine region in the world, has witnessed a remarkable transformation over the last few years. Since 1756, when it was demarcated by at that time our prime minister "Marquês de Pombal", it was, and still is, mostly known for producing Port Wine, a fortified nectar that has conquered palates on a global level. The region has now evolved to become a recognised producer of table wines or the so-called DOC Douro. This change reflects not only Douro winegrowers' ability to adapt and innovate, but also the increasing recognition of the quality wines the region is able to offer.

AZORES WINES AND VINEYARDS The vineyard landscape of the bays of Santa Maria Island is more than 500 years old and is beautiful and seductive. These are lands where heroic winemaking is carried out, because it is extremely arduous and difficult, which is now starting again after almost disappearing in the 60s of the last century. A story about the Azores that I wrote for Grandes Escolhas magazine.

"The Tejo is a beautiful region, an hour from Lisbon, that has everything Europe and Portugal offer: monasteries, castles, churches, beautiful landscapes, fantastic cuisine. And all this with a thousand years of history, wineries with 400 years. There is a diversity of wines because there is a diversity of soils and climates, ranging from plains to some high-altitude wines. We have soils ranging from sandy to clay-limestone, with a bit of schist — explained in Rio the critic and journalist Marcelo Copello, ambassador of Tejo wines in Brazil, during the opening of the caravan that will travel through cities in the country. (...) In the presentation to specialists, Copello reported that he visited wineries in the region and was surprised by brands like Ode Winery, which does not yet export to Brazil: — As a discovery, it wasn't the only one, but Ode Winery was one of the most remarkable, managed by Australians. It has a wonderful restaurant, offering contemporary cuisine that blends Eastern and Western flavors with Portuguese ingredients. They are going to launch a hotel. It's a project with a stature of investment in quality and modernity. They produce very fresh wines, with vibrant acidity and fruit. They even have amphora wines. For those seeking a distinctive wine, there's this Arinto, with 50% of the wine aged for 5 months in new 500-liter oak barrels. You can perceive the wood, and it also has quite high acidity. You see here this trend of low alcohol and high acidity. This is increasingly common worldwide. As for the Ode red wine produced in amphora, it is made with Alicante Bouschet, which is not so common: — It is a wine aged for 12 months in amphora, which surprised me because it is fresh and elegant. The amphora is not coated with pitch; it is pure. The pitch significantly changes the profile." (Full article in Portuguese; for subscribers) https://lnkd.in/dry5Agu6

Wass ist löss in Austria? It all starts in 2023 when the legislature decided to grant an official classification of individual vineyards (“Rieds”). Plots can be identified as Erste Lage (Premier Cru) or Grosse Lage (Grand Cru). This has been achieved thanks to many years of various private initiatives. However, “wass ist loess im Österreich”, not all regions embrace this new classification. The new classification The Erste Lage is the first level a vineyard can reach. After at least five years have passed, the vineyard can call itself Grand Cru. However, because the significance of individual vineyards differs per region, it is up to the wine-growing region to classify the vineyards or Rieds. For this purpose, a standard list of criteria has been drawn up that the vineyard must meet. The decree outlines the general conditions for the classification of a vineyard. For example, the use of “Erste Lage” and “Große Lage” is only permitted on DAC wines from single vineyard vineyards. In addition, the wine-growing region where the wine comes from must have defined the three DAC levels Gebietswein (regional wine), Ortswein (village wine) and Riedenwein (single vineyard wine). The decree also states that “Erste Lage” and “Grosse Lage” may only be used if the wine is harvested by hand and a lower maximum yield per hectare than the legal limit is achieved. The grape varieties used are of secondary importance for the classification, but the grape varieties must be permitted according to the prevailing DAC regulations. A notable other requirement is that the grapes must be picked by hand. And the yield per hectare must also be less than the maximum value within the DAC rules. Why a disagreement? But wass ist löss in Austria where it is normally so peaceful and noisy. Find more here https://lnkd.in/engUxwDF
