As Halloween approaches, I’ve been reflecting on how it can sometimes create anxiety for little ones, (including my Milla) especially with all the spooky, scary elements. I know many children feel overwhelmed by the intensity of the holiday, and for some families the candy overload can be a lot. In our home, even though I’m not a huge fan of celebrating Halloween we focus on making it fun and positive experience as Milla loves being part of the celebration in community. We have embraced an open-ended, colorful costumes that spark imagination and creativity—without the fear factor. Costumes that allow kids to explore different characters or express themselves in unique ways can be just as exciting! If you’re also looking for a way to make Halloween more playful and less focused on candy, consider choosing healthier treat options to hand out, or even offering non-edible surprises like small toys or art supplies. Let’s create a joyful, inclusive holiday where all kids can feel safe, happy, and part of the fun! What are your thoughts on this?

Does the thought of Halloween candy scare you? Maybe turning off the lights and leaving the house isn’t an option, or you genuinely enjoy seeing the kids. Here are a few tips to avoid eating the candy yourself: • Don’t buy it early. You might plan to buy it ahead of time and save it for Halloween, putting it on top of the fridge or in the cupboard until then. But chances are, you’ll be tempted to open it early, and then need to buy more before Halloween even arrives. Instead, wait until Halloween day (or the night before, if you won’t have time to shop on Halloween) to buy it. •Buy a kind you don’t like. Choose something that you think the kids will enjoy but that doesn’t tempt you personally. •Don’t spend days with candy in the house. The longer the candy is around, the harder it is to resist—especially with so many days until Halloween. •Pray and reach out. Commit to your accountability partner or a trusted friend that you won’t eat any candy. With God’s help, you can do this!

Here’s the truth: Halloween candy doesn’t have to be a binge trigger 🎃🍭 (This sounds 😱 scary, I know - but stick with me.) I know it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the idea of all that candy lying around, but when you put it on a pedestal or restrict yourself, it only increases your desire to eat that candy. The same goes if you’re only buying Halloween candy if that you don’t like. [this as well as not purchasing candy until Halloween day were 2️⃣of my time-honored strategies for dealing with Halloween candy.] What if you approach Halloween candy with neutrality? Allowing yourself to enjoy the candy - mindfully - and without guilt? By not making it a “big deal,” you take away candy’s power. After you eat a balanced meal, take a few pieces of candy and put them in a bowl or on a plate, and go sit down and enjoy them. Really taste them – notice the texture, flavors, mouth feel. No guilt. No shame. Just enjoyment - unless you’re choosing to eat Nerds or pop-rocks, in which case you and I need to have a conversation. (📞 me) I invite you to try this every day until Halloween. 📤Share with someone who struggles with having Halloween candy in the house. #bingeeatingrecovery #intuitiveeating #trickortreating
