Navigating the Aging Workforce: Addressing Menopause, Andropause, and the Strategic Imperative for Business: Hot flashes, sleepless nights, cognitive fog—these are not just symptoms; they are formidable barriers that impede countless individuals from realizing their full potential in the workplace. As we confront the realities of an aging workforce, it’s imperative to shine a spotlight on "human life transitions" - from pregnancy and parenting to menopause and andropause—the often-overlooked transitions that profoundly impact career trajectories, people's happiness and wellness, and productivity and business success. Consider this: for nearly 25 years, half of a woman's career is spent navigating the challenges of menopause, while men face their own set of hurdles with andropause (with onset as early as in your 30s). Yet, how many businesses truly grasp the value lost and the challenges faced when these factors are combined? The statistics paint a stark picture: a staggering 19% of women in senior positions are forced to miss critical workdays each month due to menopause-related symptoms. But when we widen the lens to encompass the broader spectrum of aging, including andropause, the impact becomes even more pronounced. It's not just about individual health; it's about the loss of invaluable leadership, experience, and productivity. The Korn Ferry Institute’s latest research unveils a startling truth: 13% of women have walked away from their careers due to the lack of support during menopause, with another 15% contemplating the same fate. This is not just a personal crisis; it's a strategic blind spot for businesses that fail to recognize the human factor at play. And it's not just women who are affected. Andropause, characterized by symptoms such as fatigue, mood swings, and decreased energy, can also take a toll on male employees. Yet, discussions around andropause remain largely taboo in the workplace, further exacerbating the challenges faced by aging professionals. It's time to rewrite the narrative. Humanity is not just a buzz word, pregnancy and parenting challenges are not a "life nuance", and aging is not just a demographic trend; it's a business imperative. Yesterday I hosted a free masterclass From Tired to Inspired and had a fabulous group of women join. I shared why you shouldn't let your doctor dismiss fatigue, weight gain, anxiety or depression as "oh you're just getting older". Your body is constantly sending you signals. If you learn how to listen, you'll know what questions to ask yourself - how to get curious - instead of ignoring them. As Neville Lonbottom said..."I ignored one once. It was horrible." My body screamed at me until I finally said, Ooh, this isn't right! A couple of past clients joined the call and shared exactly that. Before working with me, they might have ignored their fatigue or gut issues or hair falling out. Not anymore! I help my clients raise their health baseline and become self aware so they can course correct and continue on their health journey way beyond working with me.
