Women Environmental Defenders (WEDs) are leading the fight against fossil fuel extraction and climate change, protecting biodiversity, ensuring food security, and advocating for the rights of local communities. However, they bear a disproportionate burden of harm due to entrenched systems of colonialism, patriarchy, and gender norms that lead to increased violence for their activism. In our new report, “A Holistic Approach to Funding Women Environmental Defenders,” we investigate the state of funding for women facing violence due to their environmental activism and make concrete recommendations for a more holistic philanthropic approach to supporting them. 🔗: https://lnkd.in/e5yh5djM

When women lead, communities and ecosystems thrive. Omaira Bolaños, director of Latin America and Gender Justice programmes at the Rights and Resources Initiative, shares a powerful perspective on the vital role Indigenous and Afro-descendant women play in conserving nature and fighting the climate crisis. Drawing on her experiences and those of women like her mother in Colombia, Bolaños highlights how these women safeguard biodiversity and uphold ancestral knowledge crucial for environmental resilience. However, barriers like limited access to resources and male-dominated leadership structures, often prevent them from being fully recognised and supported. This article sheds light on why empowering these women is essential to preserving our planet. Happy International Women's Day! Today, as we celebrate the incredible achievements of women around the world, let's also shine a light on the remarkable women leading the charge in the animal welfare community. At Power of One, we believe in the power of women to effect change. From rescuing and rehabilitating animals to educating communities and shaping perceptions, women play a vital role in creating a better world for all beings. This year's International Women's Day theme, 'Inspire Inclusion,' resonates deeply with our mission. When we inspire others to understand and value women's inclusion, we forge a better world. And when women themselves are inspired to be included, there's a sense of belonging, relevance, and empowerment. Behind every woman in the animal welfare community lies a story of courage, dedication, and resilience. They risk their livelihoods and, in some cases, their lives, to make a difference for animals and communities alike. Yet, their impact extends far beyond the animals they rescue. They create jobs, support families, and contribute to positive change in their communities. At Power of One, we're committed to recognizing the importance of their work and empowering them to build sustainable rescue shelters that benefit everyone. Choose to See, Choose to Change. On this International Women's Day, let's open our eyes to the incredible contributions of women in animal welfare. Let's choose to see their value, their impact, and their potential to create lasting change. Together, we can build a world where kindness doesn't equate to powerlessness, where women are empowered to lead, and where inclusion is the norm. Happy International Women's Day! #powerofone #InternationalWomensDay #InspireInclusion #MentalHealthMatters #SpreadAwareness #SupportAnimalRescue #WomenEmpowerment #ChangeMakers

I watched my grandmother's weathered hands nurture seedlings, with her wisdom etched in the lines of her face, yet hunted by the devastation of a locust swarm devouring entire fields. The despair in her eyes transcends borders and resonates with the struggles of millions of women across Africa. Women make up a significant portion of the agricultural workforce globally, especially in developing countries, yet are the most marginalized group hit hardest by poverty, inequality and climate change. Climate smart agriculture represents powerful approach to empower women farmers, increase their resilience against climate change, and promote gender equality in the agricultural sector. Climate smart agriculture plays a crucial role in increasing women's resilience against climate change through improved techniques, increased access to resources, financial security. Yet its not without giants that are etched through an economic and systematic ordering including but not limited to: gender-inclusive trainings, land rights, acess to credits and markets. Addressing these specific challenges women face and ensuring their inclusion in all aspects of CSA implementation, we can create a more sustainable and equitable food system for the future. Women are the primary drivers in the agricultural sectors of many developing countries, they invest a significant amount of time in planting, weeding, ridging, and harvesting while at the same time taking care of their daily domestic responsibilities. Don't you also think it is time they are empowered to lead in advocacy efforts towards a climate resilient agriculture? At Hivos, we celebrate these great women who are cultivating change in East Africa. With Mumbi Mugo https://lnkd.in/du8EJXA4

Today (and every day), we stand in awe and gratitude for the remarkable women around the globe. Their unwavering dedication and insight are indispensable in tackling the most pressing challenges we face today - from conservation to social justice, education, peace, and health. Women understand the stakes of sustainable development and witness firsthand the repercussions of climate change in their communities. Their perspective is crucial, offering innovative solutions and fostering resilience against the adversities of our changing world. By championing gender equality and empowering women, we're not just advocating for fairness; we're investing in a future where sustainable and equitable growth is possible. Women are not just participants in this journey; they are vital architects of peace and progress. Their ability to turn knowledge into tangible action is transformative. Managing 70% of smallholder farms in Africa, women are the backbone of nutrition, providing the majority of food supplies to the continent. They embody the potential for monumental change; as the United Nations highlights, equipping women with the same resources as men can boost agricultural yields by 20-30%, reducing hunger by 12-17%. This International Women's Day, we recognized, support, and elevate women in all spheres of life. Their leadership is not just beneficial; it's essential for a healthier, more just, and sustainable world for all of us. Here's to the incredible women leading the charge for a better tomorrow. Your strength, wisdom, and compassion are beacons of hope. 🌍✨ Happy International Women's Day! ✨🌍 #internationalwomensday2024 #internationalwomensday #WomenLeaders #SustainableDevelopment #GenderEquality #EmpowerWomen #ClimateAction ~ The Pew Charitable Trusts, The Nature Conservancy, Nature United, World Wildlife Fund, Global Environment Facility, Funbio - Fundo Brasileiro para a Biodiversidade, Forever Costa Rica Association, Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation

The feminist struggle is essential to achieving environmental justice. Dismantling patriarchy is integral to Food Sovereignty, forest management and democracy. For #8March #IWRD, we spoke with women leading the charge toward system change: 🌱 Rita Uwaka from ERA / Friends of the Earth Nigeriao emphasizes the urgent need to dismantle patriarchal systems that exclude women from shaping policies impacting forests and biodiversity. 🥘 Joolia Demigillo from LRC / Friends of the Earth Philippines sheds light on how women lead the charge in reshaping food systems, reclaiming rights, and defending democracy. ✊ Karina Moraes from The World March of Women, International Women's Rights Day, calls to break free from oppressive structures and build a truly democratic society. Feminist Economy is about reshaping the system to prioritize life over profit. As we address the question of democracy, it is impossible to celebrate the 8th of March and International Women’s Rights Day without honoring the past, present, and ongoing resistance of the Palestinian People, women especially, who are its pillars. 🔗 Link in the first comment. #FriendsoftheEarth #8March2024 #FeministEconomy #foodSovereignty #SystemChange #CommunityForestManagement

Women's participation in environmental protection and ending sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) is vital for Sierra Leone's sustainable development. Women, as primary caregivers and resource managers, bring essential knowledge to natural resource management, leading to more effective environmental policies. Empowering women in these roles ensures comprehensive solutions that meet community needs. Addressing SGBV is equally crucial, as it enables women and girls to fully contribute to society, including environmental efforts. Supporting women's leadership and advocating for their protection fosters a more just, equitable, and sustainable Sierra Leone. This project is implemented with support from WoMin African Alliance #EmpowerWomen #SustainableSierraLeone #EndSGBV #ClimateActionNow #Mandelawashingtonfellow
