Let us introduce you to Joanna Nifong, a vital Women in Motion member and part of the WIM Leadership team. This year, she’s been instrumental in the Mentoring Committee, bringing her deep experience and supportive guidance to help us create a signature program for the women in our community. With over 40 years in banking and executive roles, Joanna has a unique talent for strategy, team leadership, and mentoring. Her career has taught her invaluable lessons about understanding and empowering others. As she puts it, “The gift of being mentored by someone who can share their experience and candid advice can make the difference in your career trajectory. The ability to give back that gift as a mentor to someone else is equally rewarding.” Since retiring, Joanna has served as Chairperson of the Board for the United Way of Greater High Point, and now she’s leading their strategic planning. Since joining Women in Motion, Joanna has found a meaningful community that’s helped her connect with like-minded women and deepen her impact locally. “Women in Motion,” she shares, “has been a blessing in so many ways. It has given me a comfortable way to get to know other women in the community and opened my eyes to the amazing women in the area.” Outside of her work and volunteerism, Joanna is passionate about family, cooking, and travel. Her advice for women aiming for leadership is simple but powerful: “Surround yourself with talented people who share your vision but bring different skills to the table, seek feedback, and regularly self-assess to stay on course.” We are incredibly grateful to have impactful women like Joanna in our community!

What qualities define a powerful woman leader? On Monday, the Charlotte Regional Business Alliance hosted its annual Power of Women event. Hosted by Grant Thornton LLP (US), the event featured a conversation with Cathy Bessant, the new president and CEO of Foundation For The Carolinas and Janet LaBar, President and CEO of Charlotte Regional Business Alliance. As the CLT Alliance’s 2023 Legacy Leader recipient, Cathy shared insights from her 42-year groundbreaking career in financial services at Bank of America and her vision for this new philanthropic leadership role. For such an accomplished leader, Cathy was refreshingly down-to-earth, funny, and authentic. A few key takeaways from Cathy's inspiring remarks: On Transitions: Respecting the past while charting a bold new future are keys to a great leadership transition. She is undertaking a strategic planning process to shape the Foundation's community engagement strategies. On Philanthropy: Giving is more about the passion than the money. She encouraged getting engaged through giving as part of well-rounded civic engagement. On Women's Leadership: Women still face the challenges of battling double standards. Performance, not personal branding, is the best self-advocacy. On Work-Life Balance: Like many working moms, Cathy admits "you're going to do some piece of it incorrectly every day." Her tips? Self-awareness, investment in friendships, asking for help, and using your own yardstick to measure success. On Responsible AI: Cathy highlighted AI/AR's power to drive data-driven insights while underscoring the importance of developing this technology responsibly to protect personal data. Throughout the event, Cathy inspired with her authenticity, determination to "run towards" opportunities, and perspective that courage and empathy are ultimate superpowers. The Charlotte community is fortunate to have such a principled, visionary leader at the helm of one of our region's most impactful organizations. #womenshistorymonth #womenempoweringwomen #womeninleadership #womenbusinessowners #charlotte #barbararozgonyi

On this Women’s Entrepreneurship Day 2024, let’s celebrate the incredible power of women lifting each other up. When women support women, we create a ripple effect of opportunity, empowerment and success that benefits not just individuals, but entire communities. In the UK, women-led businesses contribute over £100 billion annually to the economy, representing 12.55% of private sector employment, but a recent report by the British Business Bank found that for every £100 of equity funding in the country, less than 2% goes to women-founded businesses. The challenges women face—limited access to funding, underrepresentation in leadership and balancing responsibilities—are not individual battles; they’re collective challenges to be tackled. Special thanks to Roseann Kelly MBE and her fabulous team at Women in Business NI for having me at their Voices of Leadership Conference and for their continued hard work in bringing together female entrepreneurs with mentorship and support. To every woman out there: your success is our success. Let’s keep breaking down barriers and building each other up. Together, we’re unstoppable. 💪 #WomensEntrepreneurshipDay #WomenSupportingWomen #Empowerment #Leadership

Today, we find ourselves at a defining moment—one that demands our collective strength and vision. Many women are feeling the weight of this moment—balancing career ambitions, family responsibilities, and now, a renewed sense of civic duty. This is why Genee exists. Our mission goes beyond career coaching. Genee is about empowering women to become leaders—at work, at home, in our communities, and in the world. In times like these, we need women who will rise to lead with empathy, resilience, and clarity. We need women who will pave the way, challenge the status quo, and champion a future where equity, respect, and justice are not just aspirations but realities. Let’s be clear: leadership is not defined by power or position. Real leadership is rooted in values, in the courage to act when it matters most, and in the strength to create space for others to rise. Here’s what we’re committed to: 1. Supporting Women’s Growth and Resilience – We’re here to help women find their voice, sharpen their strengths, and face challenges with confidence. 2. Building a Community of Empowerment – Genee is a platform for women to lift each other up, share knowledge, and drive change together. Alone, our voices are strong; together, they are unstoppable. 3. Championing Inclusive Leadership – We believe that the future of leadership is diverse and inclusive. We stand by every woman who dreams of breaking barriers and redefining what’s possible. We’re here to walk this path with you, to help you turn moments of challenge into opportunities for growth, and to shape a world where leadership belongs to all of us. Together, we are powerful. Together, we are resilient. Together, we will create the change we want to see. #WomenWhoLead #GeneeCommunity #EmpowerChange #LeadWithPurpose

I see the movement. The movement of women realizing the importance of supporting and empowering other women. Especially in professional work settings. Yesterday my post was pretty vulnerable. I shared my experience of being bullied, gaslit and manipulated by a female leader. I felt lost, unsupported and worthless. My confidence was shot. I questioned if I was even qualified to do the same job at another company. I've used that experience to fuel a different type of leadership - a style that not only focuses on empowering women, but also lifting them up and giving them opportunities to shine. I often seek out organizations and women who think like me and those that want the same things for other professional women. So imagine my surprise when I attended the Customer Contact Week Las Vegas event in June, and saw that there was an entire track of content dedicated to CCWomen (Customer Contact Women), an organization started by Sandy Ko Fonseca, focused on the women in the Customer Contact world. At a HUGE conference, with thousands of attendees, there was an entire track of content, including panels, sessions and workshops, dedicated to connecting, empowering and educating these amazing women. I've never seen this before. Ever. It was so refreshing. I left that event feeling inspired and motivated and would love to see more organizations do the same to create these safe spaces for women to learn and grow alongside one another. If you’re a woman who would like to be part of the movement, here are some things you should be doing: 1. Consider Mentoring 2. Amplify Voices 3. Build NetworkS 4. Advocate for Fair Policies 5. Celebrate Success 6. Practice Empathy and Support 7. Lead by Example Let’s all be the change we want to see. Congratulations Sandy, you’re doing special work for the community and they appreciate you for it. What are you doing to empower, uplift and support other women? I’d love to hear how others are showing up to support our future leaders.

Empowering Women in Business In the hustle of breaking barriers and setting new benchmarks, it’s crucial we talk about not just surviving, but thriving as women in business. I've seen firsthand the challenges and the triumphs. It's not just about making it on your own — it's about lifting as we climb. Here's to the incredible women shaping the future of industries across the globe: Know your worth, master your craft, and never doubt that you belong at the head of that table. Leadership isn't just about taking charge — it's about knowledge, resilience, and the guts to push through those glass ceilings. Let’s keep the discussion open. Share your stories, support your peers, and remember, empowerment is contagious. Pass it on!
