A customer wanted to know their options for drainage issues off their roof and a surrounding problematic entrance area. The customer also wanted to spiff up the entrance and provide a natural experience. Because there is no stormwater drain locations nearby, and we have a tight budget, our solution is to draw the water away from the property in an elongated rain garden that fills an underground sump, almost similar to an underground cistern. The proprietary process I invented will allow larger amounts of drainage than usual into a sump at the rain garden terminus, rather than inserting a cistern, and require less excavation and maintenance costs over time. By providing this solution, we beautify the property, reduce drainage issues and treat runoff from, and around this facility by maximizing ground infiltration. * That is not a large window in front but rather a ugly block inlay design. We suggested constructing an exterior wood slat facade almost like cladding. This will completely change the experience of the space.

Residential projects can involve the use of steel as the material for building homes, from structural elements to finishing touches. Its purpose lies in providing homeowners with a durable, versatile, and long-lasting alternative to traditional construction materials like wood or concrete. Steel's strength-to-weight ratio allows for more open and flexible floor plans, while its resistance to fire, pests, and rot ensures greater longevity and lower maintenance costs. Additionally, steel construction methods often result in faster build times and reduced labour costs, making it an efficient and cost-effective choice for modern home construction. Time to introduce our runners up for the Momentum Sustainability Awards in the New Builds category. Perrymill Barn This ultra-low energy house focussed on minimising both operational and embodied carbon. Working in conjunction with Pentan Architects and PYC Construction to ensure careful detailing to meet Passivhaus standards, the superstructure avoids the use of typical high embodied carbon materials such as steel or concrete and instead heavily utilises glulam beams and frames to form large open spaces and window openings, and a feature truss above a swimming pool. This helped to minimise the embodied carbon whilst providing an attractive expressed structure throughout the building. Cement use was minimised, with Greenbloc Cemfree blockwork below the timber frame and 80% GGBS cement replacement to any remaining concrete. We also undertook SuDS design for the project, which features green roofs, bio-retention features and surface water attenuation. #MOMSAs #sustainabilityawards #glulam #engineering
