Yesterday, December 17, we honored the International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers. We were encouraged to learn that the Safe Sex Workers Study Act (S.5567 & H.R. 10456) was reintroduced. This legislation would create federal funding to study the effects of the Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act & Stop Enabling Sex Trafficking Act, collectively known as FOSTA/SESTA. We know this law has harmed sex workers! Having data to back up our anecdotal evidence will go a long way in preventing similar legislation from being introduced and becoming law. ☎️ ☎️ ☎️ Call your Senator or Representative today and tell them to support the Safe Sex Workers Study Act! 🔴 Read our statement on International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers - https://lnkd.in/gtv6Zfn8 🔴 House Bill - https://lnkd.in/gRN47ch8 🔴 Senate Bill - https://lnkd.in/gZERB4Dv 🔴 Information about our fight to end FOSTA - https://lnkd.in/gcpt-8Ua #FOSTA #SESTA #IDEVASW

Today, 17 December, is International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers. This day is important as sex workers face many forms of violence, which often remains unpunished. The protection of their rights, investigating and prosecuting all violent offences against anyone working in the sex sector is hard to put into practise if sex work itself is considered as violence against women and thus criminalised. International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers 🔴 Today, we honour the lives lost to violence and hate crimes against sex workers and stand in solidarity with sex workers, their families, friends, and advocates. No one should live in fear or be subjected to violence because of who they are or the work they do. Ending violence against sex workers requires challenging societal norms and fostering communities of support and respect. At YWCA Westman, we believe in safety, dignity, and equality for all individuals. Together, we can work toward a future where everyone is free from violence.

🗓️ December 17th: International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers This day marks a day dedicated to raising awareness about the violence and discrimination faced by sex workers worldwide. Established in 2003 by the Gaia Foundation, to commemorate the tragic loss of several sex workers and highlight the need for systemic change. The date of December 17th was chosen to honor the lives lost and to advocate for the decriminalization of sex work, safer working conditions, and an end to the stigma that often leads to violence. Sex workers, particularly those from marginalized groups, face high rates of physical and sexual violence, police brutality, trafficking, and more. Unfortunately, many of these crimes go unpunished due to the criminalization of sex work. On this day, we remember those who have suffered and continue to advocate for: Legal reforms to protect sex workers. Safer working conditions, free from violence and exploitation. Greater societal understanding and support to eliminate the stigma surrounding sex work. This day is a reminder that the fight to end gender-based violence must include all marginalized groups, including sex workers. Let’s unite to protect all marginalized persons' rights, safety, and dignity. #EndViolenceAgainstSexWorkers #SexWorkerRights #DecriminalizeSexWork #16DaysOfActivism #HumanRights #GenderEquality

Earlier this month, it was Sex Worker Pride Day. There are many reasons why people (both men and women) engage in sex work. For most - it is by choice or circumstance. And for others - it is by coercion. Human trafficking and sex trafficking will always remain illegal; however, decriminalizing sex work is the best way to ensure everyone's safety - even those who enter the industry by force. #Police are sex workers largest perpetrators of abuse - making it hard to seek help - even for those who are there by coercion. Did you know that in order to access services for victims of sex trafficking - survivors must be cooperating with law enforcement? As an #InternationalPsychologist, I conducted research in #Holland on the attitudes and values of those who stigmatize sex workers (https://lnkd.in/eYRzpEuy). What I learned was that sex workers need rights not rescue! And at the end of the day, #SexWorkIsWork and #StigmaKills. #SexWorkerPrideDay2024 #DecrimNow #RightsNotRescue
