The Biden administration announced the winners of the Clean Ports program last week, a $3 billion grant program created by the Inflation Reduction Act to reduce toxic air pollution and carbon emissions at the nation’s shipping hubs. The 55 grants across 27 states and territories will support the electrification of cargo handling equipment, drayage trucks, trains, and ferries, as well as solar power projects and EV charging infrastructure. The projects are expected to cut more than 3 million metric tons of CO2 over the first 10 years of implementation. Community Leadership and why you shouldn’t ever be afraid to ask “why not?” I want to congratulate the West Oakland Environmental Indicators Project (WOEIP), the Port of Oakland, and USEPA on the historic award of $322 million from the Clean Port's program. This money will replace 475 drayage trucks and 188 pieces of cargo handling equipment with zero emissions technologies. This award follows through on the promise that was made by government to clean up air emissions from the Port for West Oakland residents. However, government promises are rarely fulfilled without pressure for accountability. For decades, WOEIP, Ms. Margret Gordon and Brian Beveridge have provided that pressure. They persevered in the face of criticism and derision from industry to ask - "why can't it be Zero emissions,” “why can't you invest the money,” and most importantly, “why can't it be done?" By not backing down and sticking to their principals they turned the tide in West Oakland. I know, I was there! Starting with the over $100 million invested by the Bay Area Air District and State of California, and regulations adopted by the California Air Resource Board beginning in the mid 2000's, WOEIP pushed regulators like me to ask more from companies and the Port. They required that we set higher standards for emissions reductions to invest grant monies and demand more in terms of environmental performance and stewardship. I have to say, I was very dubious at first but by taking their lead, asking their questions and not just settling, we were able to achieve an over 80% reduction in toxic particulate matter from the Port of Oakland within a decade! However, as the Port and industry lauded this achievement, WOIEP asked, “what about the other 20%?" That question, coupled with additional WOEIP pressure and a far more proactive Port leadership under Danny Wan, directly led to yesterday’s announcement. It also follows a series of other grant awards that I believe will deliver a 100% zero emission’s port in the relatively near future. Now, was any of this easy – no, were there lots of fights – yes, and will there be plenty more bust ups on the road there – sure, this is Oakland politics after all. But by being fearless and asking WOEIP's question- "why not" didn't we all end up in a better place?

Exciting times ahead! Thrilled to be a part of the effort toward the vision for a sustainable future. In alignment with the Port Authority's Net-Zero roadmap, continuing an ambitious project to install electric vehicle (EV) chargers across our facilities. This initiative is a cornerstone of our commitment to transition to a 100% electric agency light-duty vehicle fleet. ❗ Why is this important? My opinion: this is about more than cutting emissions. It's about setting an example and promoting sustainable choices broadly. With these chargers, we support our fleet's electrification and motivate our community towards eco-friendly decisions. ❓ What's next? My opinion: this effort is about innovation and commitment to future generations. As we progress, we're faced with challenges that require creative solutions, collaboration across various departments, and continuous engagement with our stakeholders. We're tackling challenges with creative solutions and teamwork, aiming not just to meet standards but to create new ones for sustainability. $24 Million in grant funding! That's how much the Port of Detroit has been awarded by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as part of their clean ports program. This is an unprecedented $3 billion initiative to promote climate-friendly improvements across U.S. ports, focusing on reducing emissions, enhancing air quality and modernising port infrastructure. The funding is divided into $3 million for planning—to explore transitions to hydrogen and green methanol fuels and train workers for zero-emission technologies—and $21 million for implementation, including deploying electric equipment, installing solar-powered charging stations and replacing fossil-fuel-powered mobile equipment. A key contributor to this amazing achievement is the net zero strategy designed by the team at Tunley Environmental. I'm especially proud to recognise the brilliant work of Sustainability Scientists Dr Robert Moorcroft and Emily Alexander. Their comprehensive decarbonisation and air quality improvement plan for the Port of Detroit set the stage for these transformative projects and demonstrated to the EPA how this aligns with the port's long-term net zero goals. This is yet another proof of our work at Tunley enhances collaboration between public and private stakeholders and can help secure the essential resources needed to bring sustainability projects to life. A huge congratulations to the Detroit Wayne County Port Authority and the incredible Tunley team—your work is setting a new benchmark for sustainability in the maritime sector. #GreenPortDetroit #Cleanportsprogram #GreenPorts #PortOfDetroit

We celebrate the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for awarding nearly $250 million to the Clean Corridor Coalition! This landmark grant, funded through the Climate Pollution Reduction Grant program, will fund the electric vehicle charging infrastructure for commercial zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty vehicles along the Interstate-95 freight corridor. This grant will have a transformative impact on the region’s clean energy infrastructure. With $248.9 million in awarded funds, the project will establish 24 freight truck charging sites, equipping them with 450 charging ports across four states. This infrastructure is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 18.6 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent by 2050. The initiative will also train 400 workers, focusing on providing opportunities for low-income communities. By driving emissions reductions in the transportation sector, this project will deliver significant environmental and economic benefits, setting a new standard for clean energy initiatives nationwide.
