The Meloni Government delivered the new PNIEC Italy, the Integrated National Plan for Energy and Climate, to the European Commission on 1st July 2024. 📌 The document, in its 491 pages, revises and updates the text approved in 2019, trying to raise the energy-environmental commitments for 2030.  🔎 This is a necessary revision in light of what is required by the new Community rules, but which is not convincing to the utmost. ❓ WHAT ARE THE PROJECT'S INTENDED BENEFITS TO SOCIETY? 💡 With the growth of renewable energy sources and a drive by policymakers at both national and European level to reduce the effects of climate change, the energy sector in Ireland is undergoing rapid change to meet the goals defined in programmes such as the Climate Action Plan and Net Zero Roadmap. Smart Grid Control – CyberPhysical Sandbox (SGC-CyPhySandbox) aims to further the goal of reducing the effects of climate change by addressing the challenges of deploying renewable energy sources to the grid, increasing their uptake. The two-year project partners Walton Institute at South East Technological University (SETU), University College Dublin (UCD) and NovoGrid. It is co-ordinated by UCD’s Terence O'Donnell and co-funded by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI)'s Research, Development and Demonstration Fund and ESB Networks. #smartenergy #smartgrid #decarbonisation #researchproject

Together with my colleagues, Dirk Vansintjan and Felix Kriedemann, we published a EUSEW blog titled 'EU Energy Communities legislation 2.0: an upwards trend'. Touching upon the latest developments on EU legislation, we highlight that the EU Directives further acknowledge the role of energy communities in contributing to the ambitious renewables and energy efficiency targets. "Positively, the second-generation EU legislation clarifies that citizen-led initiatives actively contribute to other activities, including renovations, the alleviation of energy poverty, energy efficiency, offshore wind and heating and cooling." North America is speeding up its green transition (yes, you read that right). 🌎   Contrary to what you might expect, the North American market for renewable energy is experiencing significant growth these days 📈   This is due to the so-called Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) which is an important legislative package pledging state support for increasing the use of renewable energy and modernising infrastructure in the US,   At Init, we play a small part in building more wind mills "over there".
