In recent years, the people of Loitokitok have faced challenges because of deforestation and climate change, which has negatively impacted the environment and food production. With support from the World Wide Fund for Nature-Kenya, the people of Loitokitok have embraced water and soil conservation to restore the landscape, helping the land retain much-needed nutrients, enhance water retention, and reduce soil erosion. On this #MondayMotivation, we invite you to watch the impact of our work in Loitokitok. https://lnkd.in/dm95jGWv

A new video, released today by Scion and Rotoiti 15 Trust, has documented the impact that myrtle rust has on indigenous communities and the environment, reinforcing the need to maintain momentum in breeding for resistance and monitoring its spread. Whakakotahitanga i te Kaupapa | Unity of Purpose is a video capturing activity from a cultural exchange hosted in Rotorua last November that aimed to discuss the challenges posed by myrtle rust in New Zealand and Australia. It offered a unique opportunity for cultures and researchers on both sides of the Tasman to connect and learn from each other. The eight-day visit highlighted the importance of sharing traditional knowledge and Western science between indigenous communities and researchers in both countries, and how they each have a role to play in protecting our environment from exotic diseases, such as myrtle rust. Weaving together First Nations' and Māori perspectives on kaitiakitanga (guardianship) and the interconnectedness of all living things, it reinforces the vital link between healthy forests and healthy people. Read more about the exchange: https://lnkd.in/g_n33JdC The exchange was funded by Catalyst Seeding funding provided by the New Zealand Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment and administered by the Royal Society Te Apārangi. Special thanks also to the Department of Conservation (DOC) for Jobs for Nature funding which has enabled Rotoiti 15 Trust to partner with Scion on a three-year Jobs for Resilience research programme, Te Rātā Whakamaru. We acknowledge all the Australian organisations who participated in the exchange: the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (Queensland) and New South Wales Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment, and Water; the University of Tasmania; the Butchulla Nation (K’gari Queensland); the Gumbaynggirr Nation (Coffs Harbour, New South Wales) and the Bundjalung Nations (New South Wales). 📽 https://lnkd.in/gdRRsEhb

👋 Meet team #2 of our Global South Perspective Journal: Azizah Fauzi from Center for Indonesian Policy Studies and Regean mugume from Economic Policy Research Centre. They are both also winners of our Young Think Tankers contest! Their research will focus on how efforts to enforce sustainability standards may disproportionately burden small farmers in the #GlobalSouth, due to limited technical and financial capacity to comply with the requirements. 🧑🌾🌎 It will explore how these conditions impose unintended non-tariff barriers (NTBs) to farmers who depend on agriculture for their livelihoods, leading to increased household #poverty and exacerbating low productivity in #agriculture. Curious? Watch Azizah Fauzi share more in this video: https://lnkd.in/dbFZcqqz #Africa #Asia #LatinAmerica #food #farmers #research #NTBs #tariff #sustainability #climate #SDGs #regulation #barrier

Kore Hiakai Zero Hunger Collective have released its latest resource, Kai Motuhake Re-indigenising and re-localising food systems: A starting place to tackle the legacy of colonisation in Aotearoa. A must read, think, and act article for all of us working in food systems across Aotearoa, and indeed abroad, as the themes are deeply transferable. Powerful questions arise - Why am I at this decision making table? Who do I represent? How do I honour their voice and bring their voice to this table? Who is at the decision-making table? Who is missing? How might you create space for them? Do I need to step back, so space is created for others whose voice needs to be heard? https://lnkd.in/gHqmUM45

🌱 Community Champion Spotlight: Mike Paporo on Sustainable Bush Harvesting 🌱 Last week, we introduced you to Natasha, a student whose research is making waves in our community. Today, we shift our focus to a key community member, Mike Paporo, whose insights are helping us rethink the way we interact with our environment. 🪓 Sustainable Bush Harvesting: Mike Paporo has become a local expert on harvesting encroacher bushes in a way that respects and preserves our ecosystem. He stresses the importance of not cutting these bushes recklessly but instead adopting sustainable methods that ensure long-term benefits. “It’s not just about clearing the land; it’s about doing it right,” Mike says. 🌍 Turning Challenges into Opportunities: Mike’s efforts don’t stop at sustainability. He’s also playing a pivotal role in the local market with the success of fencing poles derived from encroacher bushes. These poles are not only meeting local demand but are also gaining popularity, creating a new income stream for the community. This initiative is transforming a challenge into an opportunity, showing the true potential of what our land can offer. 📈 Local Market Success: The rise of these fencing poles is a testament to what can be achieved when we combine sustainable practices with innovative thinking. Mike’s work is proving that sustainable harvesting can benefit both the environment and the economy, paving the way for a brighter future for our community. Stay tuned as we continue to highlight the incredible work being done within our community. Together, we’re not just imagining a better future—we’re building it, one step at a time. #CommunityImpact #SustainableHarvesting #BushValueChain #Namibia #InnovationInAction #LocalMarketSuccess This project is proudly supported by the Mastercard Foundation through the RUFORUM Network, in collaboration with the University of Namibia, Okakarara Vocational Training Center, and the African Wild Dog Conservancy. https://lnkd.in/gv6AsD8K

Unearthing the "Gmajna": A Slovenian Tradition for Ecological Renewal 🌿 Did you know that a historical Slovenian term for communal lands, "Gmajna," holds profound meaning for today's ecological challenges? In my recently published article for Družina d.o.o.'s Slovenski čas supplement ("Gmajna: Od Božjega daru do ekološke prenove" - "The Gmajna: From God's Gift to Ecological Renewal"), I explore the enduring significance of Gmajna and its potential to inspire us to reimagine justice, solidarity, and sustainability. Rooted in the Slovenian tradition, Gmajna—a term that historically referred to communal lands—resonates deeply with today’s ecological and social challenges. In the article, I reflect on its enduring significance and explore how it can inspire us to reimagine justice, solidarity, and sustainability in the face of climate crises and societal divisions. This isn't just a historical footnote: 1️⃣ Theological Depth Did you know that Gmajna was used by Jurij Dalmatin to translate “Church” in the Slovenian Bible? 2️⃣ Timeless Resonance “Le vkup, le vkup oboga gmajna!”—the rallying cry of Matija Gubec—continues to echo in today’s struggles for justice and ecological renewal. 3️⃣ A Call to Action How can Gmajna guide us toward an ecological conversion that embraces shared responsibility for our common home? This article reflects the spirit of Laudato Si’ and the call for integral ecology. How do we find God in the small but critical spaces, like the "Gmajna," and bridge divides for the common good? ✨ Special thanks to Bogomir Štefanič, the insightful former editor of Slovenski čas, for featuring this piece. While the full article is available to Družina subscribers, you can read an excerpt here: https://lnkd.in/e_CcxhxV. 📖 Take a read, and let me know your thoughts. How does the idea of shared responsibility resonate in your own life or work? #IntegralEcology #LaudatoSi #EcologicalConversion #JusticeAndSolidarity #Slovenia #IERN Laudato Si' Research Institute (LSRI)

🌏 What are the unique challenges in heating summer cottages? In the recent article for #CEESEUDIGIT project, Ülo Kask - an expert from Tartu Regional Energy Agency, highlighted the peculiarities of heating summer cottages which often face long breaks between heating periods. This topic is crucial given that these properties are predominantly used seasonally and require specific attention to minimize environmental impact and enhance fire safety. Ülo's tips for efficient heating 1. Ensure good ventilation: When heating, make sure there's adequate airflow to facilitate complete combustion and prevent soot buildup. 2. Regular maintenance: Clean chimneys and stoves regularly to avoid the buildup of soot and potential fire hazards. 3. Use dry wood: Wood should be air-dried with a moisture content of around 20% to ensure it burns efficiently and cleanly. 👉 Read the full advice on efficient and safe heating methods here (in Estonian): https://lnkd.in/dbB_mfja The aim of the CEESEU-DIGIT project, funded by the European Union and involving experts from #CEESEN, is to address the lack of awarenes, capacity, and resources in the CEE region, to contribute towards EU's climate goals. 👉 Learn more about the CEESEU-DIGIT project and its initiatives here: https://lnkd.in/drYv-6wp #ClimateGoals #JustTransition #GreenTransition #LIFEproject #LIFEProgramme
