Do you know of any agencies or organisations that handle teacher professional development (TPD) for gender-responsive pedagogy in Sub-Saharan Africa 🧑🏫🌍?   Through the Regional Teachers Initiative for Africa (#RTIA), VVOB is supporting teachers in Kenya, South Africa and Ghana to adopt gender-responsive teaching methods that promote equality for all learners. We are therefore seeking to work with like-minded partners to deliver and scale effective TPD initiatives on gender responsive pedagogy for Early Childhood Education, Primary and Lower Secondary Education, thus ensure that #teachers and #SchoolLeaders create learning environments where boys and girls are treated fairly and equally at school and where gender stereotypes are challenged and addressed. Northern #Nigeria struggles with gender inequality, particularly in education. Statistics reveal a glaring disparity in literacy rates, school enrolment, and completion rates between boys and girls. Providing girls with quality education equips them with the knowledge and confidence to secure better employment opportunities, improve their economic status, and contribute to the development of their communities. Since its inception, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office FCDO-PLANE Nigeria program has provided Hausa literacy and mathematics materials to 1,080,791 learners, of whom 552,406 are girls. Through establishing community learning hubs in Kano, Kaduna, and Jigawa states, PLANE has also reached 7,245 girls, 85 of whom are persons with disabilities. Read more here: https://buff.ly/4ggcApo

In continuation of our countdown to the Change Reporting Media  Fellowship on GRESP, it is important to note that there are still existing barriers to girl child education in Adamawa State. According to UNICEF, states in the north-east and north-west Nigeria have female primary net attendance rates of 47.7 percent and 47.3 percent, respectively, meaning that more than half of the girls are not in school. Education transforms lives, and the journey of women's education in Nigeria is a testament to this truth. Starting with the first girls' school in Lagos in 1879, the foundation was laid for a future where girls could access formal education. The Universal Primary Education scheme of 1976 marked a significant milestone, making primary education free and compulsory, and greatly increasing girls' enrollment. In the 1990s, Nigeria's commitment to global initiatives like Education for All and the Millennium Development Goals underscored our dedication to achieving universal primary education and gender parity. The Universal Basic Education Programme, launched in 1999, furthered these objectives by providing free, compulsory basic education for all children. Today, innovative programs such as conditional cash transfers, community engagement efforts, and STEM initiatives are helping to bridge gaps and empower more girls. Despite ongoing challenges, our resolve to break down barriers and ensure quality education for every girl in Nigeria remains strong. I joined the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child in their 43rd session in Maseru, Lesotho. As FAWE RS, we remain committed to promoting gender equity and equality in education across Africa. Despite the achievements towards the Education for All agenda, 1. Over 18 Million girls are missing out on school in Africa; 2. Africa needs to recruit and effectively train 17 million teachers; 3. Countries lack proper implementation guidelines to support pregnant and parenting girls to stay in school and transition to higher levels of education; 4. Harmful cultural practices continue to reverse the gains we have made in protecting the rights of girls; 5. Violence in and around schools disproportionately affects girls and puts them at risk of dropping out; 6. This year, a good number of African countries will be holding their general elections. This will most likely disrupt learning since schools are often used as polling centers.   If we as a Continent are to realize the potential of our demographic dividend, we must invest in education. We should; 1.Continue engagements to promote and focus attention on the prevention of violence against children in and around schools; 2. Ensure Governments develop implementation guidelines for the re-entry policies and fully support young mothers while eradicating child marriages and encouraging community and parental engagement in support of girls' education; 3. Encourage States to adopt the Safe School Declaration as a crucial step towards ensuring that educational institutions are safe spaces for our children, even in crisis settings. 4. Recruit and adequately train teachers on Gender responsive practices to promote quality education.  5. Ensure gender-responsive budgeting and monitoring at all levels to address gender disparities and promote equity through gender-responsive initiatives such as inclusive infrastructure development and teacher training. 6. Support the Committee or Experts in its fact-finding missions to ascertain the status of children's learning, especially girls in humanitarian crises.  

EMPOWERING GHANA’S FUTURE: LEADAFRIQUE’S FIGHT FOR VIOLENCE-FREE SCHOOLS Ghanaian schools are facing a disturbing rise in violence, as evidenced by the tragic deaths of students such as the O'Reilly Senior High School and Esiama Senior High Technical School incidents. These events reveal gaps in school safety and emotional well-being support for students. LeadAfrique International, a leadership development organization, stresses the need for urgent reforms. CEO Letitia Ohene-Effah highlights the lack of mental health support, parent-teacher collaboration, and proper safety protocols in schools. Through initiatives like "Be Future Ready," LeadAfrique empowers students with essential life skills and leadership training to foster safer learning environments. The organization urges policymakers, educators, and parents to work together to implement similar programs, improve emotional well-being, and prioritize non-violent, inclusive educational spaces. LeadAfrique has already impacted over 100,000 lives, but more collaborative efforts are needed to ensure the safety and well-being of all students in Ghana. Happy to have been part of the fifteen (15) participants from eight countries of the French speaking Sahel region selected to attend the training workshop hosted by the #GIRLCenter of the #PopulationCouncil last December 2023 in Dakar. That training was led by the GIRL Center’s Sahel Women’s Empowerment and Demographic Dividend (#SWEDD) team. The goal of the training was to build the capacity of regional resources on adolescent research and evidence-based programming. We are Adolescent Girls "Champions for Evidence"! The following rich topics were covered: 1. Adolescence as a distinct and formative life phase when gender differences intensify. 2. Making the most of SWEDD to ensure that vulnerable adolescents—who are often overlooked by traditional youth programs—have opportunities to participate in programming. 3. Why it is vital to work beyond individual program participants to engage families and communities, especially when working to transform gender norms. 4. Enabling entrée and work in marginalized communities; fostering community acceptance and ownership including in highly conservative settings 5. Methods to monitor and evaluate the types of changes that community-based group programs may generate. 6. Workshop tactics to foster participatory learning and promote evidence-informed action. 7. Using community-based groups as platforms to deliver accessible programming. 8. #EQUITABLE #EDUCATION To promote #equitable #education in Ghana, #law and #policy #reforms are needed to ensure that all #children have #access to #quality #education regardless of their #socio-#economic background, #gender, or #location. Some actions that could be taken include: 1. #Increasing #funding for education: The government needs to allocate more resources to education, particularly to schools in rural areas and those serving disadvantaged communities. This will help to ensure that all children have access to quality education. 2. Providing free and compulsory education: The government should make education free and compulsory for all children up to a certain level. NOT THE CURRENT FORM OF FREE EDUCATION. This will help to ensure that all children have access to education, regardless of their family's financial situation. 3. Addressing gender disparities: Efforts should be made to reduce gender disparities in education. This could involve policies encouraging girls to attend school, such as providing free sanitary pads, not doing our usual politicking with it has seen recently, building separate toilets for girls, and hiring more female teachers in rural areas. 4. Teacher training: Teachers should be provided ongoing training to improve their skills and knowledge. This will help ensure they are better equipped to provide quality education to their students. 5. Community involvement: Communities should be encouraged to participate in education. This could involve setting up parent-teacher associations, building schools with community contributions, and involving community members in decision-making processes related to education. By implementing these actions, Ghana can promote equitable education for all children, which will help reduce poverty and promote socio-economic development.
