Quality, inclusive and accessible #EducationForAll cannot be attained without addressing barriers and disparities including those related to gender. Sustainable Development Goal 5 on #GenderEquality and empowerment of all women and girls is key to this. Further, one of the objectives of the African Union (AU)'s Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA) 2016-2025 is on accelerating processes leading to gender parity and equity and yet, research from the 2023 Gender Social Norms Index by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) reveals that globally, nine out of ten people of all genders hold biases against women. Other findings are that the harmful impact of gender norms and stereotypes in education starts from the first day in Early Childhood Education (ECE) and extends all the way up into higher education. Educational systems have the opportunity to prioritise programmes and pedagogy to initiate and enhance gender equality, #inclusivity and #equity, and not reinforce stereotypes of what children are expected to become. This is through gender-responsive pedagogy, which prompts teachers to reflect on their own beliefs about traditional gender roles, raises awareness about their own biases and helps them to provide equal opportunities for all learners to engage and learn, regardless of their gender. From the 2024 'SDG 4 scorecard progress report on national benchmarks: focus on teachers’ by UNESCO Institute for Statistics and GEM Report UNESCO, African States committed to ensuring that 79% of teachers at the pre-primary level and 85% at the primary level were trained, thereby addressing the recurrent shortage of qualified teachers across the continent. Teacher shortage was one among the reasons the African Union (AU) declared 2024 as the #YearOfEducation, seeking to accelerate progress towards achieving #SDG4QualityEducationForAll on various fronts. While we may have now crossed into 2025, we continue to train our eyes on our continued aspirations such as those of the AU's Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA 2016 - 2025) as well as those of Agenda 2063. Revitalising the teaching profession to ensure quality and relevance at all levels; exploiting ICT to improve access, quality and management of education and training systems as well as accelerating processes leading to gender parity and equity, are among the core objectives still in place, all towards an Africa with well educated citizens and a skills revolution underpinned by science, technology and innovation. Let’s continue to champion for #EffectiveSchoolLeadership and #GenderResponsiveEducation as core to attainment of these goals 🧑🏫🌍📈. #NewYearNewGoals #EducationReforms #GenderEquity #TransformingEducation #EducationMatters #GenderEquality #PartnershipsForChange #SupportingEducators #RegionalTeachersInitiative #InspiringFutures #EmpoweringTeachers Ministry Of Education, Kenya (MOE) | Kenya Education Management Institute | FAWE | Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) | VVOB in South Africa | African Centre for School Leadership | VVOB

VVOB remains keen and committed to align with global efforts to promote gender-responsive Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education in Africa. At the Continental Conference on Transforming STEM in Africa recently held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, delegates emphasised the urgent need to dismantle harmful gender norms, biases, and stereotypes that hinder underrepresented groups—particularly girls and women—from excelling in STEM. VVOB was represented at the conference by Louisa Kadzo, who moderated a session on Teacher Capacity under the thematic track, 'Strengthening the Foundations of STEM Education.' Key recommendations from this meeting included setting continental targets to promote #GenderEquality and #inclusion in STEM that can be achieved in national policies supported by sufficient financing. Additionally, interventions such as mentorship, scholarships, and gender-transformative education were highlighted to encourage retention, close confidence gaps, and encourage progression into leadership roles. Holistic STEM education needs enabling classroom environment and relevant infrastructure, an interdisciplinary approach to STEM teaching, curriculum and assessment approaches to ensure all learners can advance in STEM 🧑🔬🎓📈. Through policies that promote #equity, #CapacityBuilding, and inclusive workforce cultures, Africa can ensure no one is left behind. Let’s therefore all continue championing for teacher professional development and equip educators with the skills to foster inclusive, gender-responsive STEM classrooms. Together, we can transform learning, spark innovation, and prepare an African workforce fit for the 21st century. #TransformingEducation #STEMEducation #GenderResponsiveSTEM #RTIA #RegionalTeachersInitiative #InspiringFutures #EmpoweringTeachers #SupportingEducators #YearOfEducation #UNESCO #InclusionInSTEM #SDG4QualityEducationForAll VVOB in South Africa | Expertise France | Opetushallitus - Utbildningsstyrelsen - Finnish National Agency for Education | Enabel | APEFE | European Commission

Do you know of any agencies or organisations that handle teacher professional development (TPD) for gender-responsive pedagogy in Sub-Saharan Africa 🧑🏫🌍? Through the Regional Teachers Initiative for Africa (#RTIA), VVOB is supporting teachers in Kenya, South Africa and Ghana to adopt gender-responsive teaching methods that promote equality for all learners. We are therefore seeking to work with like-minded partners to deliver and scale effective TPD initiatives on gender responsive pedagogy for Early Childhood Education, Primary and Lower Secondary Education, thus ensure that #teachers and #SchoolLeaders create learning environments where boys and girls are treated fairly and equally at school and where gender stereotypes are challenged and addressed. Further, where teaching and leadership practices promote #GenderEquality, actively challenging power dynamics, rethinking gender norms, and raising critical consciousness about the root causes of inequality and oppression. In case you know of any organisation in this regard, please share their details via direct message here, or via email on infokenya@vvob.org 📧. Everything starts with #education! Including gender equality. Education is the best investment that we can make to ensure a safer and more equitable future for all. Everyone in society has an important role to play in ending violence against women and girls. This #16Days, we highlighted the power and potential of partnerships and education to create and normalise change. As we move forward, let's make sure every learner, without discrimination, enjoys this fundamental human right and in turn, contributes to a safer and more equitable world. #16DaysOfActivism #SDG4QualityEducationForAll #SDG5GenderEquality #EndGBV #EmpoweringTeachers #SupportingEducators

Through our collective efforts at UN Girls' Education Initiative (UNGEI), FAWE , and VVOB, we know how collaboration can transform education into a tool for empowerment, equity and safety for all learners🌍. Published earlier this year, discover our co-authored opinion piece which underscores the urgent need for education leaders and governments to prioritise #GenderEquality, not just parity, by addressing harmful norms and creating equitable systems.
