The Evolution of Hiring: From Job Boards…All the Way Back to Human Connection. The hiring journey has come full circle. Here’s how we got here: 1️⃣ Job Boards (<2015) The start of digital recruitment. Job boards marked a revolution, moving job ads online so employers and candidates could connect across distances. It was a giant leap forward, but a basic one. 2️⃣ Recruitment Tools (2015-2020) Filtering and efficiency. Next came advanced tools to streamline searches and parse resumes. Employers could sort through thousands of profiles, but it was all about data, not the person behind it. 3️⃣ AI-Powered Filters (Now) Automation at scale. AI takes over, with automated filtering and data parsing. It is efficient but often impersonal. Authenticity is getting lost in the shuffle of AI-generated resumes and Bot-recruiters. 4️⃣ Video Intros: A Return to Human Connection (Future) The future of hiring. Today, video intros represent a powerful shift: the ability to see and connect with candidates as real people, not just resumes or “zombie data.” Video intros allow candidates to bring their energy, personality, and authenticity to the forefront, breaking through the digital noise. In a world saturated with impersonal filters and data overload, video-based profiles are leading us back to what truly matters...human connection. Ah, the 90s (and pre) – the golden era of recruitment. I remember it like it was yesterday, although I may have started recruiting when I was a mere 10-year-old prodigy (just kidding, of course). Back then, recruitment was a whole different ball game. I recall the days when fax machines ruled the world, and the only "social network" we had was the Rolodex on our desks. It was a time when recruiters were master conversationalists, picking up the phone & building real connections with candidates. We didn't just glance at resumes; we got to know the people behind them, quirks and all. And let's not forget the thrill of the drop-in visit – when candidates would waltz into the office or the "personnel" department, resume in hand, hoping for a chance to charm their way into an interview. It was a simpler time, a time when spontaneity was celebrated, and candidates weren't just numbers in an ATS. But fast forward to today, and we find ourselves in a world dominated by AI & algorithms. Sure, technology has its advantages – it streamlines processes, speeds up hiring, and makes life easier in many ways. But let's not kid ourselves – it's not all sunshine and rainbows. In today's tech-driven recruitment world, candidates have learned to game the system. They tailor their resumes to fit the AI algorithms, not necessarily showcasing their true skills & experiences. This means that the best candidates aren't always the ones with the most 'fitting' resumes. Is it fair that we've created an environment where this is necessary? It's crucial to strike a balance between leveraging technology for efficiency while also ensuring that it doesn't overshadow the human element of recruitment. After all, behind every resume is a unique individual with a story to tell and skills to offer. And let's not forget the recruitment dark hole – that dreaded abyss where resumes disappear into the ether, never to be seen again. Technology is only as good as the people using it and the processes in place. Back in the 90s, we remembered candidates, cared about placing people, and even if they weren't a fit for the current job, we would remember them for future opportunities. With the volume today, we have a simpler way to provide feedback with a simple button, yet it seems we aren't providing feedback quickly or even at all. So has technology really improved the candidate experience? Has technology made recruiters lazy? So as we navigate the maze of recruitment technology, let's not forget the importance of human connection. Let's strive to bring back the personal touch, the warmth, & authenticity that made recruiting in the 90s so special. After all, behind every resume is a real person with hopes, dreams, and a story to tell. And with a little humor, empathy, and a whole lot of heart, we can revolutionize the way we recruit – one conversation at a time.
