Do you know that breast cancer (BC) accounts for ¼th of all cancer cases in Nigeria and is the leading cause of cancer mortality, with 20.5% of all cancer-related deaths, (Ferlay et al., 2024)? Unlike in developed countries, where only 10% of all BC are Triple Negative Breast cancer (TNBC), Nigeria's breast cancer distribution is characterised by 47.4% TNBC (Adeniji et al., 2020). This suggested that the high cancer mortality in Nigeria might largely be from TNBC. To read more on TNBC: https://lnkd.in/dvhMnZww

METASTATIC CANCER Metastatic cancer refers to cancer that has spread beyond the point of origin to other distant areas of the body. Metastasis is a word used to describe the spread of cancer. Unlike normal cells, cancer cells have the ability to grow outside of the place in your body where. they originated. When this happens, it's called metastatic cancer, advanced cancer or Stage IV cancer. The most common sites for cancers to metastasize include the lungs, liver, bones and brain. Other places include the adrenal gland, lymph nodes, skin and other organs. Some people will have minimal or no symptoms of metastatic cancer. In most cases, metastatic cancer is not curable. However, treatment can slow growth and ease many of the associated symptoms. #snsinstitutions #snsdesignthinking #snsdesignthinkers

Interim Cancer Fund: earlier, faster and fairer access to new cancer treatments in Australia An Interim Cancer Fund in Australia would provide earlier, faster and fairer access to new cancer treatments, bridging the gap between TGA registration and PBS funding, where there is a high unmet need and where patients cannot afford the time to wait for a medicine to be listed on the PBS. Ben McDonald, AstraZeneca’s Country President for Australia and New Zealand, believes that an Interim Cancer Fund is the best way to provide faster and fairer access to new cancer treatments, bridging the gap between TGA registration and PBS funding. Triple-Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) refers to the fact that the cancer cells do not have progesterone or estrogen receptors, and don’t make any or too much of the protein called HER2. TNBC gets its name because the cells test "negative" on all 3 tests. According to the American Cancer Society, TNBC accounts for 10-15% of all breast cancers. These cancers tend to be more common in women younger than 40, who are African American, or who have a BRCA1 mutation. To learn more about TNBC, visit: https://lnkd.in/gFSANKun

While cancer that affects the ovaries is considered ovarian cancer it is important to note that there are several different types of ovarian cancer. The ovaries are made up of several different types of cells, therefore, each type of cell can develop into a different kind of cancer which then dictates how it is spread, how it is treated and the prognosis of the disease. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Breast Cancer is the most common cancer in the world. Every year breast cancer claims more than 650,000 lives worldwide. Survival rates have been recorded to be as high as 90% in high income countries. In sub-Saharan Africa the rate is less than 40%. A recent study found that the incidences of breast cancer in sub-Saharan Africa had increased by 247% from 1990 to 2019. The highest incidence was recorded in Nigeria.
