“For Sale: Baby Shoes. Never worn.” - the power of storytelling in just six words by E. Hemingway. A couple of weeks back, I attended the Communicate FinTech panel event on Marketing vs PR vs Sales: How Do We Build Bridges? organised by Drofa Comms in collaboration with The Fintech Marketing Hub CIC at Rise, created by Barclays. One thing that stood out for me was the art of storytelling. Storytelling is king! It's how we communicate, how we learn, and ultimately, how we connect. People won't remember facts, but they will remember stories. The role of Marketing is to create the good story... 1. Start with a 'what's the shift' insight and humanise it. 2. Break down the complexity so it’s easier to understand. 3. Be authentic - this builds trust. 4. Encourage participation, be inclusive - spark that conversation. 5. Focus on emotion, not just your services. 6. Stick to the core narrative but then tweak the angles to see what resonates best. 7. Finally, every story needs a challenge or twist. Without it, you'll lose engagement. And remember, if you can’t grab someone’s attention in 60 seconds, you won’t hold it any longer - you don't want to hear any 'so what?' questions at the end of it. If your fintech is only getting press release pick-ups on sites like Yahoo Finance, not only do you need to adjust your strategy, but you should also carefully evaluate the impact this has to your brand. Press releases are great and should be a part of the overall strategy, but their purpose is to promote your news, same as advertising. If you want to demonstrate your value, you must share insights through earned media or panel opportunities. After all, no one wants to be "sold" to.
