Video Game Engagement Video Game Engagement, by Generation ------------------------------------ By 2025, the number of gamers is estimated to reach 3.6 billion and generate a whopping $211 billion in revenue. The video game industry’s success is fueled by enthusiasts who engage with gaming by playing, viewing, creating, and making gaming a part of their social life. So who are these gaming enthusiasts? This infographic, sponsored by Roundhill Investments, illustrates how players from different generations around the world engage with video games. Let’s get into it. The Methodology ------------------- For transparency, the data we used in the graphic above pulls from a survey conducted by Newzoo between February and May 2023 with 74,295 respondents across 36 countries. Here are the age ranges for each demographic according to Newzoo for reference. Gen Alpha (born 2010 or later / 10-13 years old)Gen Z (born 1995-2009 / 14-28 years old)Millennials (born 1981-1994 / 29-42 years old)Gen X (born 1965-1980 / 43-58 years old)Baby Boomers (born 1946-1964 / 59-65 years old)Generational Insights ------------------------- Gaming is the most popular form of video game engagement across all generations surveyed. However, when you dive in to each cohort, some interesting insights emerge. ### Gen Alpha & Gen Z Of the Gen Alphas surveyed, 93% are video game players. However, both Gen Alpha and Gen Z are also the most likely groups to engage in video gaming in other ways, such as following gaming channels, and participating in online communities. This isn’t surprising, as they have grown up with technology as an integral part of their lives. ### Millennials, Gen X, & Baby Boomers Interestingly, the percentage of people engaging with these other forms seems to drop with age. So even though just under half of baby boomers with access to the internet consider themselves to be gaming enthusiasts, that refers mostly to playing games, with just 5% of them engaging in other ways. The Future of Gamingis Diverse ---------------------------------- With younger generations driving the future of gaming, new business models and technologies will continue to emerge to appease these audiences across a multitude of touchpoints and of course, continue to attract attention from brands outside of the industry.

Online gaming has blown up over the last few years. You know, things like poker, slots, casino games and sports betting. Companies in this industry, what we call the iGaming business, need to get smart about who they target and how they market their stuff if they want to make it. One big group worth focusing on? Millennials. There’s around 73 million millennials just in the U.S., and 14.4 million in the UK. We’re basically talking about folks born between the late ’80s up through the late ’90s. They grew up with the internet and cell phones glued to their hands. Their interests and habits as customers could impact how they like to play online games. One major thing about millennials – they want experiences tailored just for them. Online gaming marketing aimed at millennials should be all about providing personalized promotions, game suggestions, and other helpful stuff focused on each person. That personal touch helps connect with millennials and gets them hooked. Millennials are also all about social connections and community. They tend to be super active socially. Online gaming companies can appeal to their need for social interaction by building in features like social media linkage, chat tools, and multiplayer games. On top of that, lots of millennials like using their smartphones and tablets for activities like gaming. Online gaming businesses need to make mobile accessibility a top priority and ensure their platforms and games work smoothly on mobile. Stuff like responsive design, simple interfaces, and mobile-friendly ads helps. The bottom line? Marketing online gaming to millennials takes a combo approach – one that blends personalized content, social features, and optimization for cell phones. Roblox is growing up! Recent data shows that 46% of U.S. teens regularly play Roblox—up 48% in just one year. This data comes from a reliable survey of over 13,000 teens, with an average age of 15.8. As Roblox matures, brands should take notice. Just like YouTube did years ago, Roblox is attracting older players as technology and quality improve. For brands, this means you might be paying up to eight times more than you think to reach your audience. Why? Brands often pay for ad space in popular games, but analyzing demographic data from 80 games revealed a fourfold difference in age demographics.
