Latest on Showhome: The Evolution of Roofing in the UK "The UK’s modern architectural scenery is made up of a massive variety of styles, with housing in particular having distinctive styles depending on where in the country you live. The look of contemporary housing owes much to the history and traditions of house building dating back centuries. The results of today’s landscape are usually based on the local availability of building materials, this is reflected not only in buildings but what’s on the roof too. Roofing across Britain is unlike anywhere else in Europe, many other countries tend to use predominantly one material. However, the local availability of raw materials in the UK over the centuries has resulted in a diverse range of roofing styles". Says Andrew Hayward, Managing Director at Russell Roof Tiles. When choosing a roof for your home or building, it's important to consider the type of roof that will best suit your needs, budget, and aesthetic preferences. Here are the four most common types of roofs: Gable Roof Known for its triangular shape, the gable roof is one of the most popular styles. It’s easy to construct and allows for excellent water drainage, making it ideal for areas with heavy rainfall or snow. Gable roofs also provide extra attic space and are generally more affordable due to their simple design. Hip Roof A hip roof features slopes on all four sides, making it sturdier and more resistant to wind than a gable roof. The inward slope creates better stability, which is ideal for areas prone to high winds or hurricanes. However, hip roofs are slightly more complex to design and build, which may increase construction costs. Flat Roof Popular in commercial buildings and modern home designs, flat roofs have a low slope, giving them a sleek, minimalist appearance. They are easier to install and maintain, and the flat surface provides an opportunity for rooftop gardens or solar panel installations. However, drainage can be an issue, so proper waterproofing is crucial to prevent leaks. Mansard Roof Inspired by French architecture, the mansard roof has four sides, with two slopes on each side. The lower slope is steeper and can create extra living space, making this style perfect for adding an attic or loft. Although they add character and space, mansard roofs are more complex and expensive to build. Each roof type offers its own unique benefits, so it's essential to choose one that aligns with your structural needs, budget, and design vision. Need expert roofing solutions? 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒋𝒆𝒄𝒕 𝑯𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒍𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕: 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑵𝒂𝒓𝒓𝒐𝒘𝒔 Achieving optimal thermal performance calls for a keen focus on the building's geometry and construction nuances The Narrows encountered unique thermal challenges due to its intricate design and the inclusion of setback steps in its structure. To address these challenges, innovative solutions were implemented, to limit thermal bridging, maintain passive house requirements and ensure the design is durable. Some energy efficient tips inspired by The Narrows: - 𝘩𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘭𝘺 𝘦𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘦 𝘗𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘏𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘦𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘰𝘸𝘴 - 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘴𝘶𝘯-𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘥𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘴 (𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘭𝘺 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘢𝘪𝘳 𝘣𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘳 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘨𝘺) These tailored approaches emphasize the importance of customizing solutions to suit the specific thermal dynamics of each building design, ultimately ensuring optimal energy efficiency and occupant comfort. "The future is already here - it's just not evenly distributed." - William Gibson On Thursday, Timber Block delivered a stunning 4,500 square foot custom home to clients in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina. The R-30 insulated wall panels for this home arrived Thursday morning, flat-stacked on two 53' trailers...no wide loads and no special transportation equipment. What continues to amaze me is that even with the massive size of this home, all of the walls went up in one day! Think about that for a minute...framing, insulation, and both the interior and exterior cladding for every perimeter wall on a 4,500 square foot home completed in one day. Question: How long would it have taken a framing crew, insulation crew, siding crew, and drywall crew to duplicate this same amount of work? Several weeks? Several months? Today, it's raining at this jobsite with 0.5"-1" of rainfall expected over the next 24-hours. If this home was built with "conventional" framing methods, any framing material delivered onsite would already be absorbing that ambient moisture...and just waiting to shrink and cause issues during and after construction. Builders struggling with labor shortages, extended timelines, material availability, or increased warranty calls due to uneven floors, drywall cracks and nail pops, bowed studs, etc., please do your business and mental health a favor. From energy-efficiency, sustainability, reduced labor requirements, time savings, quality of materials, durability, design/style flexibility...the gap continues to widen in the advantages offsite construction offers over traditional construction methods. After nearly 25+ years in the residential construction industry and 1000's of homes built, I can unequivocally state that it's impossible to get the same level of quality control and efficiency with "stick-built" or "site-built" construction that you get with offsite...especially a Timber Block home. Reach out to me and I'll be happy to share our construction manual and answer any questions you may have on the Timber Block system. I also encourage you to explore the resources available on all types of offsite construction systems through the NAHB's Building Systems Councils at https://lnkd.in/d7EzsYrX.
