"As a country, we are tone-deaf to the needs of the hearing impaired." A very important Op-Ed in The Times Of India today. The work that we at Tech Mahindra Foundation do for #PersonswithDisabilities has made me realize that while we aspire #inclusion, the default setting for most of us is exclusion. And nowhere is this more evident than how we look at the Speech-and-Hearing Impaired (or the SHI) community. A few years ago, while observing SHI students at Noida Deaf Society, one of our NGO partners, it struck me that #SignLanguage (SL) is the natural form of expression for these students, their first language, or as we Indians like to call it, their "mother tongue". And as with any other language, there are nuances, subtleties, and improvisations to using SL which only the users are familiar with. The SHI community loves to use the Sign Language - cracking jokes in it, sharing information, counselling, consoling and comforting each other. However, when members of this community have to interact with the rest of us, there's an obvious communication gap. They can't speak and hear, and we can't sign. And so, as the article says, nearly 63 million of "us" can't meaningfully interact with the rest of us. Unless, we can make Sign Language more mainstream by getting many more of us learn it, starting when we are still at school. If our schools can offer German, Spanish, French, or for that matter, even Sanskrit, why not Sign Language? The problem continues when members of the SHI community are ready to join work - and many of them are as capable, if not more, than any of us - as we are yet to make our workplaces inclusive in the true sense. For that to happen, at least some of us working in every organization must learn to use and comprehend SL. Are you a company wondering how to be more inclusive of deaf people? ✅ Awareness and Training: The first step in creating an inclusive environment is to raise awareness among the entire team about the culture and challenges faced by deaf people. Organize training sessions to help employees better understand deafness, communication tools, and best practices. ✅ Communication Accessibility: Ensure that all internal communications are accessible to people who are deaf. This may include using sign language interpreters in meetings, transcribing videos and podcasts, and using assistive technologies such as captioning and looping. ✅ Physical Accommodations: Ensure that the work environment is adapted to the needs of deaf people. We can all play our part to be more deaf aware, both at work and in daily life.👂 This week we’re celebrating #SignLanguageWeek - a week that celebrates BSL and ISL and encourages us all to educate ourselves on these languages. We often advocate for diversity and inclusion in the workplace which includes creating an environment that’s supportive and comfortable for ALL employees. It’s important to build the confidence of your staff working with deaf colleagues or those with hearing loss. Why not organise training in BSL or send some of your staff on a deaf awareness training course? Don’t also forget that offering workplace adjustments can go a long way in ensuring the happiness of your employees!
