✨ Jeevika App has been announced as a winner of Dasra's Data for Good Exchange 2024 Empowerment Challenge (#D4GX2024), and I couldn’t be prouder! :D For me, Jeevika was never just a product—it’s was a movement, mission, and a deeply personal journey. Reflecting back on it today, my role as a product and project manager of Jeevika went far beyond building features; it was about building trust, hope, and dignity for thousands of street vendors fighting for their basic rights. The Vision Two years ago, we took on an ambitious challenge: 👉 Build a first-of-its-kind scalable tech solution to tackle street vendor’s harassment. 👉 Provide free legal aid to empower them. 👉 Create an inclusive, community-driven platform. The scope felt overwhelming, but the need was undeniable. This wasn’t just about an app—it was about standing with people who had been overlooked for far too long. Building Jeevika: A Ground-Up Approach Jeevika’s story began on the streets, shaped by countless hours spent in Delhi’s bustling markets under the scorching sun. Over time, we heard hundreds of street vendors share their daily struggles—harassment, lack of legal support, and the fight for livelihoods. Each story shaped a feature; every need inspired a solution. Before the app even launched, the urgency was so pressing that we organized legal aid camps across 100+ markets in Delhi, addressing harassment on the ground. When Jeevika app was launched in 2023, it became a tool of hope, promising empowerment. Thousands of vendors rallied with us, making it clear: this was their platform, built for and by them. The Features That Mattered Jeevika’s impact lies in its simplicity and inclusivity: ✅ SOS System: Instant help during harassment. ✅ Rights Repository: Empowering vendors with legal knowledge. ✅ Data Insights: Documenting struggles to drive advocacy. ✅ Inclusive Design: Built for all literacy and accessibility levels. The People Behind the Movement This journey wouldn’t have been possible without visionaries like Parth Shah, Lakshmi Goyal, and Prashant NARANG; the tireless efforts of Deepak Sharma; and the unmatched energy of the Jeevika Fellows. Together, we turned an idea into a movement, safeguarding the rights of thousands of street vendors and providing them a path to dignified livelihoods. Now, under the leadership of Amit Chandra and Nitesh Anand, Jeevika’s future looks brighter than ever!  Here’s to the street vendors who inspired it all, the team that made it possible, and the belief that bold ideas can create lasting impact. Can alternative narratives really shift the culture that normalises gender-based violence? This The Economic Times article highlights how non profits are instrumental in transforming societies. We are so thrilled to see Breakthrough's trailblazing campaign 'Bell Bajao' that emphasises on bystander intervention to combat gender-based violence featured in the article. Launched in 2008, the campaign encouraged people to take a stand against violence in their communities, making them community leaders in the process. It takes several years of works to transform norms. With the intention to see real change happen, we have attempted to shift norms, narratives and mindsets in more ways than one. In addition to cultural and media campaigns like Bell Bajao, our deep transformation work on ground is going strong in 4 states. Our partnerships with the Punjab and Odisha state governments aims at integrating our gender-equity curriculum across all government schools to create a gender-just future for all. Systemic change is necessary for norm shift to happen and we are grateful to see our work towards this vision being recognised, along with other such organisations. The India Philanthropy Forum (IPF) Boston, co-anchored by Indiaspora and Dasra, successfully convened 160+ diaspora philanthropists, foundations, experts, and non-profit leaders. Held recently, the forum was a dynamic platform designed to accelerate impact for India’s most marginalized communities by fostering collaboration and sparking innovative ideas. Attendees engaged in thought-provoking discussions on the future of philanthropy, exploring strategies to enhance diaspora giving to India and create sustainable, long-term impact across areas including gender equity, climate action, collaboration, social innovation and leveraging data for philanthropy. The event highlighted the critical role of the diaspora in driving social change, igniting a movement for greater philanthropic engagement and deeper understanding of India’s social sector. By connecting diverse stakeholders, IPF Boston reaffirmed the power of collective action and set the stage for future collaborations to address pressing challenges in India. My origins are from Uttar Pradesh. A state which boasts of one of the seven wonders of the world - Taj Mahal. A state which also boosts of the legend of the Jhansi Ki Rani. But Uttar Pradesh is also the state with the most population in India which means abject scarcity of resources and most distressingly a gender ratio of 912 women to 1000 men - far, far below India's national average. Milaan Foundation's and my journey started from Uttar Pradesh from my dream to build a school and provide free education especially to girls to now building a movement of grassroot girl leaders in three different states; which will soon touch 100,000 and further impact 1 Million more community members. Still working in social impact and furthermore in a grassroot organisations in the Global South can come with enormous bottlenecks from lack of funding to lack of access to the global resources that many international non-profits tends to easily crack. To reverse and reclaim very narrative, Milaan's team who has been fortunate enough to grow enormously despite our core being in grassroot has decided to launch the Uttar Pradesh Coalition To Empower Girls (UPCEG) a few years back. Milaan together with 33 other grassroot nonprofits in Uttar Pradesh working for adolescent girls will tackle the issues of capacity-building, of access to funding, to scale-ups, to technologies for good and most importantly to the spotlight and platform they have always deserved. And through this initiative, we together hope to level the playing field not only for us as non-profits but for the communities and especially the adolescent girls who will now have to their right to choose education, choose aspirational careers, choose their right to say no to being a child bride and a teenage mother.
