🌾 Transforming Lives through Aquaponics in Homabay County 🌊 Before climate change reshaped his reality, Alex Ojwang was a dedicated sorghum and maize farmer in Kaksingiri Valley, Kenya. However, unpredictable rainfall devastated his farm and income, leaving his family struggling to meet basic needs, including school fees for his children. In 2023, everything changed when Victory Farms partnered with Feed the Future and USAID Kenya/East Africa to launch the Homabay Extensive Aquaponics Program (HEAP). This initiative aims to boost food production and create jobs through sustainable aquaponics, integrating fish farming with vegetable cultivation. Victory Farms is developing partnerships with smallholders (“Pond Partners”) to build egg production ponds on their land. Their support to Pond Partners includes water preparation, stocking fish in the ponds, feeding the fish, collecting the eggs weekly, and providing horticulture water supply. When Alex learned about the opportunity to become a "Pond Partner," he didn’t hesitate. Now, Victory Farms is helping him—and 25 other smallholders—establish egg production ponds on their lands, using solar-powered systems to deliver water sustainably. The result? A reliable income from fish farming and the ability to grow crops like tomatoes. Watch his story below 👇 #Aquaponics #SustainableFarming #WorldFoodDay

Restoring forests without planting trees? It’s possible with #Treecovery!🌳 In Makose village (#Tanzania)🇹🇿, four farmers have embraced #KisikiHai (or Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration) and rainwater harvesting techniques since 2019. By selecting, pruning and protecting the stumps of cut-down trees, they have been able to quickly #regreen this once degraded area. So far, more than 3,000 trees have been restored exclusively in this area. Restoring ecosystems in the Dodoma region is crucial for the livelihood of locals, who mostly depend on their land for agriculture and livestock keeping. The transformation of Makose village is only one of many successful Treecovery projects. In collaboration with LEAD Foundation Tanzania we have brought back a total of 9.6 million trees in this area... and this is just the beginning!🌱 Let’s cool down the planet together 🌍 Read more about our regreening work in Dodoma, Tanzania: https://lnkd.in/gJhi6UE

#GetToKnow our work in Rwanda #Week2 #Sustainable_Landscapes and #Climate_Resilient_Agriculture Join us this Friday, as we explore our impactful efforts in sustainable landscapes and climate-resilient agriculture. Rwanda heavily relies on its natural resources with over two-thirds of the population engaged in agriculture, forestry and tourism for income and food security. Yet, the country faces significant challenges with more than 745,000 hectares of agricultural land eroded annually, leading to the loss of an estimated 6 million tons of crops each year (IUCN, 2022). GGGI Rwanda is dedicated to supporting the Government of Rwanda in developing sustainable landscapes and climate-resilient agriculture to address these challenges. Discover our achievements in the slides below, from mobilizing resource for projects like the Green Gicumbi to exploring innovative solutions such as Agrivoltaics. Stay tuned for next weeks updates on how we're shaping the green growth in Rwanda! #climate_resilience #greengrowth #greenrwanda 🇷🇼🌿 Dr. Malle Fofana Caroline Raes Helena McLeod Frank Rijsberman Global Green Growth Institute GGGI Africa
