Understanding the Diverse Roles in Safety, Quality Assurance, and Environmental Health Recently, there has been noticeable confusion regarding the distinct responsibilities of professionals in occupational health, safety, and environmental management (HSE) compared to those overseeing food safety or quality assurance. Despite their specialized nature, these roles play critical functions within reputable companies. Occupational Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) Manager: This individual ensures safe and healthy working conditions for employees while minimizing any negative environmental impact of operations. Food Safety Officer: Responsible for ensuring the safety of food products produced or processed within a facility, adhering strictly to health and hygiene standards. Quality Assurance Manager: Their primary role involves ensuring that products or services meet specified standards and customer expectations regarding quality. In my personal opinion, employers should thoroughly understand these responsibilities when hiring for these roles. There is a significant number of job postings that often blur these roles into one position, which can lead to confusion and potential mismatches in skill sets and responsibilities. Clarifying these distinctions is crucial to effectively manage and staff these critical functions within organizations.

QC/QA is the only thriving career for a food technologist. This was the belief of a soon-to-be graduate from my alma mater, Yaba College of Technology, when he approached me during my visit to the former Dean of the School of Technology. In his words: "After graduation, I will look for a quality control role. I know that’s the perfect job for a food technologist." I believe he is not alone in this belief; many view QC/QA as the default career choice for food technologists after graduation. While QC/QA is a valuable profession focused on product quality, IT IS NOT THE ONLY OPTION. Common valuable careers for food technologists, aside from QC/QA, include: 1. Product Development and R&D: Specializing in creating and improving food products and exploring new technologies. 2. Food Safety Specialist: Ensuring food is safe to eat. 3. Sensory Scientist: Testing how food tastes, smells, and feels. 4. Food Process Engineer: Designing and improving food production methods. 5. Regulatory Affairs Specialist: Ensuring food meets legal standards. 6. Food Packaging Specialist: Designing packaging to keep food fresh and safe. 7. Food Microbiologist: Studying microbes in food to ensure safety and quality. Please, know what you truly want, not just what you feel is readily available. I’m proudly a product developer. What about you? What’s your career path or dream job? #proudlyfoodtechnologist #Qc #QA #productdevelopment
