What leads GrowHub, the innovation incubator at Hempel, to be so successful when many others end up disbanded or reabsorbed into their companies? It’s been an honour to work on this insightful thought leadership interview with Mark Sutton, Head of Innovation & GrowHub at Hempel. Check it out below. ⬇️ Is your company shaking up the status quo, implementing cutting-edge tech, or making pioneering moves within your industry? INNOVATION’s readers would love to learn more! Send me a message!
Why is it so important for your company’s #innovation #incubator to start with the voice of the customer? And how does that lead to more effective results? “We generated a giant poster outlining the top 25 challenges across the coatings industry, and now when we go to our internal teams we don’t just ask people for good ideas – we point to the poster and ask people for creative solutions and fresh ideas for solving these specific challenges, starting the process first with a problem we want to solve for our customers,” says Mark Sutton, Head of Innovation & GrowHub at Hempel A/S. Explore Mark’s insights into the three major factors that have led to the success of #GrowHub, the innovation incubator for Hempel A/S, one of the leading global paint and coatings companies. One of the fundamental aspects for innovators and startup founders developing industrial hardware products to consider is ensuring that their solution is novel & original. This distinctiveness not only differentiates the startup from its competitors but also forms the foundation for its sustainable competitive advantage. This is where the second parameter of the Forge Innovation Rubric (FIR) becomes invaluable. FIR is a diagnostic tool designed to help innovators systematically assess the risks associated with product innovations. Novelty and originality can be evaluated by determining whether the solution is unique, disruptive, and differentiated from existing products. It should provide a comprehensive solution to the problem rather than addressing only a part of it, and it should have the potential to become a permanent and enduring solution in the future. The consequences of failing to deliver a novel and unique solution is illustrated by the example of Bright Automotive. Established in 2008, Bright Automotive aimed to disrupt the fleet management market with its plug-in hybrid—the IDEA. Despite its innovative concept, the IDEA struggled to differentiate itself from competitors. Lacking a strong competitive edge, Bright Automotive faced funding challenges and ultimately ceased operations in 2012. In this blog, we explore how novel and original solutions create unique value for customers and open up new markets. This post is the second in a series of five blogs detailing each of the parameters of the FIR. Product innovation goes beyond simply solving problems—it’s about crafting something truly unique and valuable. Without novelty and originality, even the most well-conceived solutions risk getting lost in an overcrowded market. This is why the Forge Innovation Rubric (FIR) highlights Novelty and Originality as a second critical factor in mitigating product innovation risks. In this blog, we explore how this parameter enables innovators to stand out by offering disruptive original solutions, addressing problems holistically, and creating enduring products that tackle broader challenges. Stay tuned as we continue this series on the Forge Innovation Rubric!

Here's what I learned about the future of manufacturing from Aditya Bhatia (a Y Combinator backed founder) Aditya is the founder of Orangewood, a startup that's democratising the manufacturing industry with affordable, cutting-edge, AI-powered robotic arms. Here's how I look at it: 1. AI-powered robotic arms can bring in a whole new level of precision and consistency in the assembly of our products, leading to higher quality with fewer defects. 2. By automating repetitive tasks, robotic arms can operate around the clock, boosting production rates and enabling us to meet growing demand more effectively. This increase in efficiency can also help in reducing lead times, ensuring quicker delivery to users. 3. Robots can optimize material use and reduce waste by precisely cutting, assembling, and finishing parts. Moreover, their efficiency can lower energy consumption compared to other production processes. By integrating new levels of automation, we can ensure its aligned with our environmental & sustainability principles. As we continue to push the boundaries of what's possible in micro-mobility, the lessons drawn from Aditya's work in robotics and automation will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in enhancing our production processes and remain at the forefront. Our impromptu brainstorming session here is just a glimpse into the kind of collaboration that propels startups to solve real-world problems. I'm also reminded that every encounter with a fellow entrepreneur is a lesson in disguise. Aditya Bhatia | Orangewood | Y Combinator | Surface Moto
