CBTA (Competency-Based Training & Assessment) and Trainee Understanding ✈️ 🧠 The evolution of a pedagogical approach transitioning from the assessment of skills (exercise-based grading) to the evaluation of a set of required competencies establishes the fundamental cognitive prerequisites for carrying out specific tasks. It lies at the core of training for key aviation professionals, especially pilots. Recent developments on the subject propose such an approach, progressively embedding the concepts of CBTA and EBT into aviation training organizations, as well as the recurrent training systems of air operators. It can be observed that this approach is gradually gaining consensus. 📋 Beyond a rational method based on a standardized catalog of technical and non-technical competencies, the question arises regarding the training of instructors in these new tools, whose conceptual mastery presents a true challenge. The new principles of progression analysis in learning require a broader perspective and a solid understanding of the cognitive domain, its terminology, and the concepts used. However, this progress requires that it be well understood by both instructors and trainees to ensure a coherent approach to teaching. 💡 A good understanding of the learning objectives developed in CBTA justifies that trainees receive dedicated training time regarding what is expected of them. This step deserves to be systematically positioned at the beginning of the training curriculum to promote reflection on their own learning. This is essential for developing the fundamental prerequisites for task performance and acquiring specific professional competencies, both precise and more general ones. 🤝 These reflections stem from a collaborative brainstorming effort within the #Simaero Training Working Group, aimed at refining CBTA implementation for enhanced training outcomes. #CompetencyBasedTraining #AviationTraining #PilotTraining #AviationEducation #AviationSafety #FlightTraining #TrainingAndDevelopment #CognitiveSkills #InstructorTraining #AviationInnovation #SkillsDevelopment

EASA has recently published and updated the 2025 edition of The European Plan for Aviation Safety (EPAS). Would you like to learn more about our successful programmes with airlines and how we can help your airline/ATO prepare for the introduction of CBTA/EBT in the second half of the decade? The ‘Competence of Personnel’ has been elevated to the highest strategic priority, including a comprehensive revision of Part-FCL Subpart J, with the introduction of CBTA methodologies in instructor and evaluator training. As an organisation delivering CBTA and accredited to train the trainer in Coaching, Mentoring and Facilitation at Gold Level with The European Mentoring and Coaching Council EMCC Global, we understand the importance of standardisation, inter-rater reliability, and concordance. However, through delivering IE training to multiple airlines, we have also seen the power of facilitation, coaching, and mentoring as key behaviours for optimising the learning journey. Our app, The Resilience Deck, supports our training with a continuous developmental approach at the instructor-observable behaviour level, providing standardised learning and model demonstration of KSAs. It’s definitely on the horizon—would you like to get ahead of the aircraft? info@resilientpilot.com Resilient Pilot #training #CBTA #continuousdevelopment #EASA #ICAO #facilitation #coaching #mentoring #airlines #ato
