How do we create space with an intersectional lens when it's not your lived experience? It's a good question and there is a lot to be said primarily by those who you are working with. I'd ask did you ask them or attend similar spaces to the one you attended and ask yourself the questions who is missing? why/how are they unable to be here? what can I do to invite them to my space that I'm trying to create. Most importantly remember 'You can lead a horse to water but you can't make the house drink' - that's ok and you haven't failed. (I did change the quote slightly no need to gender the house - like if you agree 😁) This quarter we are running our Rest Club at People Dem Collective in Thanet, Kent. We will be holding space for conversation around wellness, mental wellbeing, how winter treated our communities bodies and what their hopes are for 2024. If you are an organisation prepping for the end of 2023 financial year, get in contact with NBE FITNESS as you strategies your staff wellbeing offers, team away days or health/wellbeing supplier days we here to run Rest Clubs for your team. One of the articles published in the Disability and Health Journal provides valuable insights that deserve our attention and can be effectively applied in our communities, organisations, families, and daily lives. Authors Emerson, Fortune, Llewellyn, and Stancliffe's research in their article "Loneliness, social support, social isolation and wellbeing among working age adults with and without disability" is particularly important to improve #community, #organisational, and #individualwellbeing. Here are three key points linking their research to practical improvements in #wellbeing. Our added thoughts connect these points to the concept of #personalwellbeingbudgets, illustrating how they can effectively track and manage our wellbeing in tangible and meaningful ways These insights, originally published in 2020, are even more valuable today as we face ongoing #globalConflicts and rising costs of living, causing many to struggle #financially, #mentally, and #socially: 1: Prioritise Reducing #Loneliness: The article highlights that loneliness significantly impacts wellbeing, particularly among people with #disabilities. Personal wellbeing budgets should be allocated to initiatives that foster social interactions and #communityEngagement to directly address loneliness and improve overall wellbeing. 2: Enhance Social Support Systems: The study emphasises the importance of comprehensive #socialSupport, beyond just increasing social contacts. Investing personal wellbeing budgets in holistic programs that provide emotional support, meaningful social activities, and opportunities for community participation can significantly enhance social connectedness and #wellbeing. 3: Tailored Wellbeing Programs: The findings show that loneliness and social isolation affect different demographic groups uniquely. Personal wellbeing budgets should be used to create targeted initiatives for specific groups, such as #youngerAdults or those living alone, to address their unique needs and improve their social connections and overall quality of life. Whether it’s sharing a meal, participating in festive activities, or simply enjoying each other’s company, these moments foster connection and joy. Unfortunately, many older adults become less socially engaged over time, which can affect their overall wellbeing. That’s where we come in! Our Balanced Care Method™ focuses on opportunities for our clients to make new friends, engage in enriching conversations, discover exciting hobbies, and stay connected with family, friends, and their community.
