Until recently, I hadn't made much of an effort to belong to my local community. It felt temporary, but after almost 4 years, I have accepted it as my home! Joining local organisations was a scary step. Who has time for politicking, personal issues of committee members, and, of course, the time commitment? I've been selective. Working from home shelters me from office politics (thank god!). I hate the playing off of people against each other and the unnecessary backstabbing that often goes on. Community organisations are the heartbeat of country towns. Mum and Dad were involved in everything when we were kids, so it was normal to get roped into helping at someone's busy bee. Everyone just mucked in and helped out. But the town I grew up in was wonderful, and even though we've been gone for 30 years, it's still where I think of as home. I've joined 2 community groups. 🏃♀️ Parkrun - I volunteer every other week to keep our local Parkrun going for other runners and visitors. It's a lovely group of people and we make it fun. 🎊 Town Festival committee - my local town is having a festival, and they needed someone to write (and design the website). I agreed to do it. At the end of the day, we all want to build our communities and make sure everyone can thrive. My friend Chris Storoschuk is doing just that by donating items for bid for the Waterford Skate Park! The Waterford Skate Park initiative is all about building a 55,000 sq ft concrete skate park that welcomes everyone. With multi-terrain areas, the park is designed for all skill levels and abilities, ensuring no one is left behind. It’s more than a skate park; it’s a platform for growth, learning, and healthy living for our younger generation. We’re committed to adaptive participation, making sure the park is wheelchair-friendly. Collaboration like this is key to ensuring all communities have access to equitable and inclusive services. Coinciding with its centenary year, Naas Racecourse has been officially designated as Ireland’s first Age Friendly Racecourse 🏇 This recognition comes following the successful completion of an extensive initiative to improve accessibility, comfort, and inclusivity for older adults on the grounds. Changes include: 🏇 Parking spaces located near the entrance to provide ease of access for older patrons and individuals with disabilities. 🏇 Universal design-compliant seating with armrests and backrests. 🏇 Specially-designed tables with wheelchair access. 🏇 Lower betting counters for ease of access for patrons using wheelchairs and much more finer details. Spearheaded by the Kildare Age Friendly Programme and Naas Racecourse, the project marks a significant step forward in making sporting venues across Ireland more inclusive for all generations. #AgeFriendlyIreland #PositiveAging

Mass-participation running events are open to everyone, but not always accessible to everyone. A One Poll survey* found a third of disabled people felt that sporting events were not set up to cater to them. Four in ten did not feel confident enough to take part. We are determined to change that!
