1. Why Do You Want to Be a Leader?
Following your passion is the key to finding your potential – John C Maxwell
Moving ahead on the path of leadership requires you to find the reason, why you are keen to accede on this way. Why do you want to become a leader in the first place? Do you really have clarity on becoming a great leader? If you find the answers to these questions you have really understood what it entails to be a leader. When you find the purpose of moving in a particular direction, leading becomes easy. Now the question is, what is leadership? Leadership is the ability to obtain followers. There is a lot of talk about leadership and wanting to become a leader. Such qualities inculcate because of sheer hard work and determination with which you have achieved your dreams or gained expertise in a particular stream that other people are not aware of. The moment you place your vision and critical thinking in a particular work and can motivate others to walk on your path, then people will naturally look up to you as a leader because you are seeing that potential in them that can mould them to accomplish their objectives. They will follow you because you have the capability to do things differently which they are unable to do. If you take responsibility to inspire them to work in critical conditions by providing them with optimum liberty, so everybody wishes you must take charge of the situation because you have the creativity to perform a task and achieve the desired results, flawlessly. Many people just talk about leadership, few understand it, most people want it, but only a few achieve it.
Do you have the strength to lead?
Leadership is about character. Character strengths are critically important. Do you have the courage to lead effectively to stand by your convictions? The courage to take calculated risks? And the courage to do the right thing at a right time? Do you have the strength to admit when you are wrong? Can you control your emotions? Do you have the strength to be fair to fight against systems or people who are unfair?
The strength to develop, sacrifice and succeed, are the indispensable attributes of an effective leader. An efficient leader also shows inner strength by admitting to the shortcomings and seeking to rectify the errors or omissions to grow and develop as an eminent leader. Leaders also display inner strength when they sacrifice for the good of the team and organization, and when they fight hard to overcome obstacles to achieve success. The best part is that we can develop these strengths of character, whether we are in a leadership position or not. Let’s begin by making a commitment to developing as a leader and as an individual of solid character.
What motivates you to lead?
ASSESSMENT: On a scale of 1 to 5, how much do you agree or disagree with each of the following statements:
An important piece of research by Chan and Drasgow talks about individual differences in an individual’s “motivation to lead”—examining the reasons why someone might choose a leadership position. They focus on three types of motivation:
Affecting Identity: This motivation to lead comes from an actual enjoyment of being in a leadership position, where a person feels privileged to be in the leadership position.
Calculative-Non-Calculative: Motivation to lead involves the extent to which an individual weighs the costs and benefits of taking on a leadership role. Leadership has its benefits and its burdens. A person high on non-calculative motivation to lead doesn’t consider the costs and benefits, but rather focuses on the growth of an organization.
Social-Normative motivation to lead is feeling an obligation to lead. For example, other people might call on you or nominate you to take on a leadership position, and that social pressure motivates you to lead. An individual might also feel an obligation to take on leadership in order to take on a cause—a social movement—or to enact change.
[Scoring: Items 1 & 2 = Affecting Identity; Items 3 & 4 = Calculative; Items 5 & 6 = Social-Normative]. Pay attention to the scales with the highest scores.
Which is your strongest type of motivation to lead. Why motivation to lead is important? It helps provide insights into what motivates a person to lead and provides a foundation for future leadership development. Think about how your personal motivation to lead can affect you and your future as a leader.
What is the quality of leadership?
Once you reach the leadership position you can envisage the vision, where you can assess the bigger picture and can focus on what you actually have and what you need to accomplish your targets. If you cannot fetch any difference from what others are working then you look like a fool. So, it is not about you wanting to sit in the leadership position, you wanting to see something must get you to that position, rather it is about keeping the organization or targets beyond yourself and enthusiastically working on achieving them. The best quality of a leader is his sense of life is beyond himself, it’s not about his sense of identity beyond himself. Somebody becomes a leader because he is willing to think and feel and act for more people than himself. If you act for yourself, you are called self-centered. If you can able to create your identity within the entire nation or the world, you will be looked at differently. Essentially, your leadership will come from the right context depending upon what you are identified with, because everybody needs an identity, what sort of uniqueness have you taken, will determine the context and the quality of your leadership.
Whatever we do in every human activity, the purpose of the activity is to produce something. Production may be a needle, a laptop, love, joy, health, well-being, it doesn’t matter what, we want to produce something. When we act, we want it to be effective. How small an act or how big an act is not important we want something to happen effectively, which means it’s a question of efficiency, it’s a question of how little we have, and how much more we could do. That’s what makes you. Because all of us have the same amount of time in a day. People always tell me Sreekanth, you had such a long day. Unfortunately, there’s no long day, God gives me only twenty-four hours. I would like to bargain for more but it will not happen. You can make it more by increasing your efficiency, the way you work, you can delegate to the people as part of yourself where other people will work as a part of you so that you don’t have to bother about everything around you. And the power of delegation will lead to a sense of responsibility amongst your subordinates, which is again an imperative step of leadership. In this sense, you can enhance what you do but time-wise all of us have the same time, we can’t help it. So, how much can you produce in a little amount of time is the question. In the limited span of time, that we have as life, what is it that we can do? Is it just about efficiency? Is it about simply mindless efficiency? “Do better”, “do better”? No. It is about impacting people’s life. Lifting people to a new level is a requirement for effective leadership.
John C Maxwell states in his book “Leadership Gold” that learning to lead effectively has been a real challenge. Teaching others to lead effectively has been an even greater one. Your ability to become a better leader depends on how you respond. Reading a book is never enough to make a difference in your life. What has the potential to make you better is your response? Please don’t take shortcuts. Hammer every gold nugget into something useful that can help you become a better leader. Don’t be like the boy playing chess with his grandfather, who cried, “Oh no! Not again! Grandpa, you always win!”
“What do you want me to do,” replied the old man, “lose on purpose? You won’t learn anything if I do that.” The boy responded, “I don’t want to learn anything, I just want to win!” Want to win isn’t enough. You have to go through a process to improve. That takes patience, perseverance, and intentionality. William A. Ward said, “Committing a great truth to memory is admirable; committing it to life is wisdom.”

Good leadership always makes a difference! One has to toil in the flames of hard work to become a leader. I’ve seen what good leadership can do. I’ve seen it can turn around organizations and positively impact the lives of thousands of individuals. True leadership is not easy to learn, but what worthwhile thing is? Becoming a better leader pays dividends, but it takes great effort. Leadership requires a lot from a person. It is demanding and complex. Here’s what I mean…
Leadership is the willingness to put oneself at risk.
Leadership is the passion to make difference with others.
Leadership is being dissatisfied with the current reality.
Leadership is taking responsibility while others are making excuses.
Leadership is seeing the possibilities in a situation while others are seeing the limitations.
Leadership is the readiness to stand out in a crowd.
Leadership is an open mind and an open heart.
Leadership is the ability to submerge your ego for the sake of what is best.
Leadership is evoking in others the capacity to dream.
Leadership is inspiring others with a vision of what they can contribute.
Leadership is the power of one harnessing the power of many.
Leadership is your heart speaking to the hearts of others.
Leadership is the integration of the heart, head, and soul.
Leadership is the capacity to care, and in caring, to liberate the ideas, energy, and capacities of others.
Leadership is a dream-made reality.
Leadership is, above all courageous.
