#14 Why Gathering Learning Data Falls Flat Without Action

It is funny how much talk there is about (learning)data even though it is useless for the most. Data is an abstract thing but at the same time so “cool” word to say. So, many just mention “data-driven” just for the sake of getting away from the uncomfortable situation.

Data is just data; it doesn’t do anything. It is you who must start doing something.

🚫 The Pitfall of Passive Data Collection

If you've been diligently collecting data from your courses but haven't seen any tangible improvements or outcomes, you're not alone. Data on its own is like seeds without soil – full of potential but incapable of growth without the right environment.

As trainers and content creators, gathering data is only the first step. The true magic happens when this information is translated into actions that enhance the learning experience.

Remember, your goal isn't just to know more – it's to do better.

🔍 Examples of Actionable Learning Data

So how can we pivot from passive collection to active utilization? Here are some powerful examples of how learning data can transform your courses:

  1. Personalized Learning Paths: By analyzing assessment results and engagement metrics, you can tailor content to address individual learner needs, creating a more personalized and effective learning journey.
  2. Course Content Optimization: Identify which sections of your course have high dropout rates or low engagement and refine them. This could mean simplifying complex material, adding interactive elements, or providing additional resources.
  3. Feedback Loops: Use survey and feedback data to directly involve learners in the course evolution process. Their insights can guide new module developments or highlight areas needing clarification.
  4. Predictive Analytics: Leverage historical data to predict trends and behaviors, such as which students might need extra support early on, enabling proactive intervention.

Business use cases for the data

When people learn new things, they are giving you golden nuggets to know even more about your actual business topic. Don’t just settle for enhancing your courses, you can go even deeper into data use because data can be analyzed and used in different ways.

Here are some business examples:

  • Partnership training: You can categorize different partners into different groups or tag them inside the learning platform. When you are pulling the data out of the system, you can compare different partners and how they have succeeded. Then you know where to focus your training efforts or maybe you find your superstar organization that you will offer even more resources.
  • Onboarding customers or employees: You will get data about what is hard, and what is interesting for the new people of your services. Maybe you can enhance your communications using that data or develop new services.
  • Safety training: Integrate your data to other platforms and then you could give access to new information if the learner has enough knowledge about it. Data can open doors to construction sites if you know enough about the safety measures.

So make your feedback loop and start asking the right questions. And start to be a real data user. Then you would be more data-driven than most.

The most common pitfall in online learning is that creators are creating material banks instead of courses.
