For 14 Years, and after5

We wish everyone could have heard Karla Bernal Morales, Vice President of the Arizona Technology Council, talk about San Miguel High School on February 13th at the February AZ Tech Council "after5," which was hosted at the school.

Our hearts were full of her touching words and as soon as the speech was over, we ran over and asked her for a copy. Here it is - - the beautiful perspective from a local leader on what this school means to her and to our great city:

"Ladies and gentlemen,

Thank you so much for joining us this afternoon. Along with my colleague Jamie Nielsen, our Director of Operation and Events, we are happy and feel privileged to join you all this afternoon in support of this extraordinary institution.

I learned about San Miguel High School back in 2010, when Jim Click and I were in the process of coordinating a meeting, he requested that before getting anything fixed on our calendars that I come by and learn about this new local private high school on the southside of Tucson. I was very familiar with the area, and I decided to pay them a visit.

I fell in love not only with the concept, but also with the students, the teachers and the school administrators. The level of commitment and engagement of all involved was truly impressive and admirable.

I stand before you today with immense pride and unwavering support for San Miguel High School. In the next few minutes, I hope to convey to you why this institution holds such a special place in my heart and why I believe it deserves our collective endorsement.

First and foremost, let me tell you about the transformative impact San Miguel has on its students.  Today you will have the opportunity to experience first-hand what type on individuals this institution and your support produces.  This is not just any high school; it is a beacon of hope and opportunity for young people who often come from underserved communities. San Miguel provides a rigorous education grounded in Lasallian principles, focusing not only on academic excellence but also on character formation and service to others. It equips its students with the skills, knowledge, and values they need to succeed in college, career, and life beyond the classroom.

But what truly sets San Miguel apart is its commitment to inclusivity and diversity. Regardless of socioeconomic background, ethnicity, or academic ability, every student at San Miguel is welcomed with open arms and provided with the support they need to thrive. This dedication to equity and inclusion is not just a slogan; it's woven into the fabric of the school's culture and is evident in every interaction you witness on campus.

Furthermore, San Miguel's innovative approach to education deserves recognition and support. Through its Corporate Work Study Program, students gain real-world work experience while helping to finance their education. This unique model not only instills a strong work ethic but also fosters invaluable connections with the local community and prepares students for the demands of the professional world.

Beyond academics and career readiness, San Miguel places a strong emphasis on service and social justice. Students are encouraged to be agents of positive change in their communities, to advocate for those who are marginalized, and to embody the values of compassion and empathy in everything they do. This commitment to social responsibility cultivates leaders who are not only academically proficient but also morally grounded and socially conscious. Examples you will see tonight are Ms. Jacqueline Valencia, CWS Coordinator, Growth & Retention. Andres Ramirez Math Teacher, and Oralia Gomez, Director of Enrollment & Student Retention and so many more that I wish I could name.

In supporting San Miguel High School, we are not just investing in the future of individual students; we are investing in the future of our society. We are contributing to the creation of a more just, equitable, and compassionate world where every young person has the opportunity to fulfill their potential and make a meaningful difference.

So, I urge you to join me in supporting San Miguel High School. Whether through financial contributions, volunteerism, or simply spreading the word about the incredible work being done here, each of us has a role to play in ensuring that President and CEO Dave Mason and San Miguel continues to thrive and serve as a beacon of hope for generations to come.

Thank you for your attention and for considering how you can support this extraordinary institution. Together, let's make a difference in the lives of San Miguel students and in the world they will one day lead."
