37 Gold Medals: 1st International Canned Wine Competition Winners: Sans (White), and Insomnia (Red)

37 Gold Medals: 1st International Canned Wine Competition Winners: Sans (White), and Insomnia (Red)

Wednesday, July 24 the 1st Annual International Canned Wine Competition was held in Boonville, CA. As a judge, I was thrilled to be part of this event. Allan Green put on a competition worthy of his decades conducting wine contests in California.

We had a fantastic turnout which represented the serious focus being placed on this packaging category. 200 different wine-in-a-can were submitted, representing over 50 wineries across 12 states and 7 countries.

The wines came from the Napa Valley, Central Coast, North Coast, Southern California, the Finger Lakes region of New York, Oregon, Michigan, Spain, Italy, Australia, Argentina, and England, among others.

You can read the results here, but one quick analysis showed Gold Medal winning wineries came from California (19), New York (7) and Michigan (3).

The Best of Show for White was Sans, Napa Valley, CA, with their Riesling. The Best of Show for Red was Insomnia, Buellton, CA, with their Pinot Noir.

You can also see winners for can design!

The 2nd Annual ICWC is schedule for July, 2020, same location, and given the growth and acceptance of the wine-in-a-can category by both consumers and producers, we all expect significantly more participants next year.
