2023 AWS re:Invent Wrap-Up: Our CEO's Perspective on Major Announcements

The 2023 AWS re:Invent Conference was better than ever this year, and CPT Global was excited to be a part of it. As a new AWS partner and a leader in IT solutions for over 30 years, we were eager to discover all the latest AWS developments, and how businesses are continuing to leverage the mainframe.

Key Takeaways from the Conference

Here are a few things we learned at the 2023 AWS re:Invent conference that are very much worth sharing.

Mainframes are Still Critical to IT and Businesses

As the cloud gains momentum, the mainframe is still viewed as a key player in many IT infrastructures. From presentations to conversations, companies at the conference shared how they are taking advantage of hybrid solutions to get the most out of both the mainframe and the cloud.

For finance and healthcare companies especially, where data privacy is paramount, hybrid systems are proving to be an effective strategy in evolving toward the cloud. And while many businesses are clearly interested in making the transition, they still have significant investments in mainframes and can't afford to ignore them.

Ultimately, the major theme around the topic was how businesses can make mainframes easier to work with, as well as how to get mainframes to deliver more value as companies move toward cloud technologies.

CPT's Perspective

We were pleased to see hybrid solutions continue to be a focal point at the conference and for businesses. Mainframes have been the primary driving force behind many IT infrastructures for decades, so it's no surprise that companies are looking for ways to keep them active and integrated.

For many, it's not a matter of choosing one or the other – it's a matter of optimizing mainframe and cloud operations to work seamlessly together. As companies modernize their mainframes and move to the cloud, hybrid solutions are a natural next step. With AWS's focus on hybrid solutions at re:Invent and their partnerships with mainframe solutions providers like CPT Global, it's clear this trend isn't going away anytime soon.

Cloud Transformation Dominates

A main theme from this year's conference is that cloud transformation is now the standard approach for businesses looking to optimize their IT operations, with many sessions revolving around how companies can best use AWS services such as Amazon EC2, S3, and RDS.

AWS CEO Adam Selipsky also shared his perspective on cloud transformation, touching on key points in data, infrastructure, AI, and Machine Learning, while emphasizing the importance of collaboration between businesses and cloud providers to achieve transformation success.

CPT's Perspective

Although the shift towards cloud computing is accelerating, companies are reluctant to fully migrate from traditional on-premises systems. Based on conversations at the event and with clients, this is largely due to security concerns, legacy system compatibility, and the high costs associated with transition.

While transformation is still high on the menu, there's a trend toward modernizing in place and leveraging hybrid solutions. Not only are businesses viewing this as the more practical and less risky approach, but it also empowers organizations with unique advantages - combining the scalability and flexibility of the cloud with the stability and reliability of the mainframe.

Security Remains a Top Priority

Everyone was talking about data security this year, and for good reason. With cyber-attacks and data breaches on the rise, plus AI making bad actors stronger every day, companies are seeking better ways to protect sensitive information on their cloud, mainframe, and hybrid systems.

CPT's Perspective

AWS are ahead of the security game, incorporating advanced security features such as encryption plus identity and access management into their services. However, the responsibility for securing data ultimately falls on the shoulders of businesses themselves, so companies must have a multi-faceted security strategy in place, which includes:

  • Conducting frequent audits and vulnerability assessments
  • Integrating advanced AWS security tools
  • Setting up strong access controls
  • Educating employees about cyber threats

A Sharp-But-Expected Rise for AI & ML

It doesn't need to be said, but Artificial intelligence (AI) was the hottest topic at the conference, as businesses explored the latest solutions powered by machine learning and natural language processing.

For AWS, the importance of AI can't be overstated. Businesses of all sizes recognize the transformative potential of AI, and this trend was echoed at the conference, with sessions focusing on AWS’s launch of Amazon Bedrock and integrating AI across AWS services.

Amazon Bedrock enables businesses to customize foundation models (FMs) privately and securely using company data to build applications specific to their domain, organization, and use case. AWS also announced its new Gen AI entrant at the conference, Amazon Q, which is an AI-powered assistant designed to help businesses solve problems, generate content, gain insights, and act while leveraging company repositories, code, data, and enterprise systems. Other major announcements included several new tools and services, including:

  • Amazon SageMaker Canvas, a new tool that enables developers to build generative AI models
  • Amazon CodeWhisperer, which helps developers write code more efficiently
  • Amazon Lex Writing Assistant, a Gen AI assistant that helps writers improve their writing style

With Amazon's Q sitting alongside SageMaker Canvas, CodeWhisperer, Lex, Lake Formation, and more, it's obvious the tech giant is committed to making AI more intelligent, accessible, and scalable for businesses.

CPT's Perspective

While the growth of AI technologies in business operations is both exciting and inevitable, it is obviously still finding its industry foothold. CPT sees AI playing a much bigger role in monitoring and development in the short term, but in the long term, trust is still a big issue.

AI is undoubtedly going to continue gaining prominence and becoming more of a core business strategy component. However, companies must have the necessary expertise and resources to  leverage AI fully and responsibly for their transformation needs. During his announcement, AWS's VP of Data and Machine Learning Services presentation touched on these topics.
