3 KEYS TO DEVELOPING A CONFIDENT AND EMPOWERED MINDSET

What does it take to develop The Hero Mindset?

That's a good question!

Having now published several articles in The Hero Mindset Newsletter, I came to realize that I haven't spend any time sharing what The Hero Mindset Blueprint entails.

Chances are that if you are reading this newsletter, you have a grasp on my story and where The Hero Mindset came from, but if you haven't seen it yet, be sure to watch this video below to give you context on my story.

After all that I have experienced, over the last three years I have distilled all the steps I have taken down into a framework, which I call The Hero Mindset Blueprint.

Today, what I would like to share with you are the three key levers for you to think about that can help you shift your mindset to drive results and embrace change.

The Hero Mindset Blueprint

Now, I am not able to share the entire model at once! It would likely feel overwhelming if you saw everything at one time that goes into cultivating a confident and empowered mindset.

But here is where you want to start.

Cultivate Confidence

When I was paralyzed and laying in the bed for days on end, I knew that I had to take charge of my mind. I needed to cultivate my own confidence in the situation I was in and could not wait for things to get better.

I had to take charge of my own mind and make things better.

My goal was to shift my mindset from DISCOURAGED to DETERMINED.

A few questions I would challenge you to ask yourself:

  • How frequently do I connect with trailblazers who can accelerate my success?
  • How deliberately do I feed my mind?
  • How willing am I to be vulnerable with myself?

Developing a mindset where you are in control of your thoughts requires deliberate action to help you move towards your goals and dreams.

For example:

  • Are you struggling to perform in your new role? Who do you know that has walked a similar path before you that you can help guide you?
  • Are you doubtful or fearful about the new strategic direction your team is headed in? What are you doing to educate yourself and learn about the intricacies about the new direction and how you can leverage opportunities?
  • When it comes to the change you are experiencing, what type of person do you want to be? Someone who falls victim to change, or someone who leans into it and embraces new opportunities?

Myself, with two trailblazers who have helped accellerate my success, Steph Tuss and David Neagle.

To shift your mindset from discouraged to determined, first ask yourself the question, "How can I cultivate my own confidence?".

Positive Practices

After you sharpen your mind, it's time to also pay attention to the positive practices that you have in place that keep you there.

Living with a spinal cord injury, I don't have the luxury to neglect positive practices. Everyday I must make sure I am doing all that I can to maintain my wellness, and the goal here is to shift your wellbeing from LETHARGIC to LIVELY to perform everyday.

A few questions to consider:

  • What is working that I need to do more of? What is not working that I must change?
  • How clear am I in the direction I am going? How do I reinforce this vision to myself on a daily basis?
  • Do I beat myself up when I am off track, or do I have the capacity to be empathetic towards myself (and others) as I figure things out?

It's easy to fall off track. We all do it.

Myself included!

However, what is most important is to have positive practices in place so when we fall off track, we know how to get back on track as quickly as possible.

What does that look like for you?

Have you taken the time to identify what helps you perform at your best?

Are you wandering aimlessly towards your goals, or are you clear, specific, and deliberate in the direction you are going?

Again I will ask, "What must change?".

Radical Responsibility

Finally, the cornerstone to my life and all the work that I do is radical responsibility.

I am passionate about helping people shift this behaviour from PASSIVE to PRIORITIZED.

When we operate through blame, carelessness, avoidance, and other behaviours, what that does is it starts to diminish our integrity. It makes other people resent us, not want to be around us, and we start to lose integrity with ourself.

That can lead us down a path where we may find ourselves in a situation such as being laid off, having a relationship end, or failing to perform up to the required standards because we neglected to take personal responsibility along the way.

Ask yourself:

  • How willing am I to own everything in my life?
  • How do I measure success? Is it entirely by numbers? How do I include behaviours in performance of my character?
  • Do I allow people to push me into doing things, or am I able to maintain my boundaries? How do I create space to do what is most important in my life?

Something I will always remember Gary Vee say was "People don't hate the mistake. People hate the cover up. People hate the lie."

That is something that really stands out for me that I think we can all relate to.

More so, what does that do to you inside when you don't accept personal responsibility?

It erodes your confidence. It erodes your integrity with yourself.

The Hero Mindset is all about accepting radical responsibility to help you become a hero in your won story.

Thanks for the helpful prompts, Kevin. I was able to think of areas in both my professional and my personal life that I could bring positive practices into, instead of simply fearing a negative future outcome. I have more control on these outcomes then my fear leads me to believe!
