4 Things That Had the Greatest Impact on Weight Loss

I felt absolutely hopeless when I was 23. I just got diagnosed with my 5th (!!) autoimmune condition. And was told that I was basically out of options.

↗️ I gained 30 lbs. in a month.

😰 I was anxious and depressed.

🩸 My periods were horrendous.

And the worst part of it was that on paper, I was doing it all “right”.

🏃♀️ I was active and working out at least 5x a week.

🥗 I was eating healthy foods, choosing organic and non-processed foods.

❌ I had eliminated gluten, dairy, corn, and sugar.

💊 I was taking like 100 different supplements from my naturopathic doctor.

Still – none of it was working. I felt like a fraud because even as a Nutritionist, I felt like I could not get my body to do what I wanted it to. It’s like it was fighting against me. 😭

The reason it wasn’t working was because I wasn’t truly addressing the ROOT CAUSE 🧬.

Hormones control every single aspect of our health. And as women, we have unique 28-day hormone cycles that dictate everything from our metabolic function, nutrient needs, ability to work out, and even energy levels!

Hormones and autoimmunity have a bi-directional relationship. When hormones are disrupted this leads to an increased risk of expressing a gene that influences autoimmunity or kickstarting a flare. Then when you are in an active flare the system disruption directly influences hormone balance.

Which is exactly why 80% of those living with autoimmunity are women. It is why women notice the onset of autoimmunity after pregnancy or postpartum. It is why you feel foreign in your body and like you are no longer in control. But there is something that you can do about it.

It felt like my symptoms were dictating my life because my hormones were absolutely shot. But when your hormones are imbalanced it means that they systems responsible for regulating them are begging for support.

Fast forward 8 years ⏩ I put my autoimmunity into remission without meds.

I am anxiety medication free. I’ve lost over 50 lbs. and been able to keep it off easily for the last 4 years. Best part, I had my daughter naturally when they told me it would be impossible. 🩷

The even better part – I’ve helped 2000+ women do that same! 🎉✨

This is Exactly What to Focus On…

The key to doing this was by focusing on the following areas of my health to get my body to feel safe again to resume hormone production and turn off the alarm in my body.

1️⃣ METABOLIC FUNCTION: It is important to eat high-quality, nutrient-dense foods. But it has to be enough to make sure that your body has the tools that it needs to function optimally. When you chronically under-eat, this can trigger a famine response in your body which spikes cortisol and disrupts blood sugar. If you are skipping meals, eating less than 1500 calories a day, or restricting foods for “gut health” or inflammation, you are likely undereating and causing severe nutrient deprivation that is keeping your body in an activated stress response.

To rebuild metabolic function you need to strategically reintroduce nutrients in your diet to get it to feel safe again to resume regular operations. You can also time this with your hormone cycle to make sure that your body is getting the right nutrients, at the right time, in the right amount to help kickstart hormone production.

A great way to start this process is with my 3-4-3 Method:

  • Three (3) ounces of protein with every single meal to help improve lean mass development and stimulate metabolic function.
  • Four (4) servings of cycle-synced phase foods each day. These foods are the most supportive of your cycle at each phase.
  • Eat every 3 hours to regulate blood sugar.

2️⃣ CYCLICAL STRENGTH: Strength training is the single most effective way to burn fat, reduce circulating cortisol levels, and balance all key hormones in a single workout! But as your hormones shift across your cycle phases, so does your body’s ability to handle workout intensities. Meaning that you cannot work at the same intensity day in and out. 3️⃣ NERVOUS SYSTEM REGULATION: If you are stuck in an activated fight or flight response, your body will continue to sound the alarm even if you are doing “restful” activities. This is exactly where you can be doing everything right but getting nowhere. Improving your body’s ability to activate the parasympathetic nervous system (your rest and digest and get out of the fight or flight response gives your body the ability to truly rest). In fact, doing this helps you become more stress-resilient. Meaning that you will be better equipped to respond and reset from stressors that do occur naturally in life.

4️⃣ GUT & LIVER HEALTH: Your gut and liver are the primary detoxification systems for your body and hormones. Unfortunately, they take the brunt of the beating when you are stressed, which then adds more stress because your body is unable to filter out toxins that can lead to bacterial overgrowth, estrogen dominance, mold, candida, you name it. Incorporating high fiber foods rich in anti-inflammatory properties is critical to supporting these symptoms. Along with recognizing inflammatory triggers in your own body. This can get confusing because foods that are “inflammatory” might not be the true cause of inflammation in your body. So blindly eliminating them will only lead to more nutrient gaps and stress. This is why we focus on what we can add to your diet and identifying your inflammatory foods to help your body get what is needs to heal.
