4 Tips To Generate More YouTube Views in 2020
I started my YouTube channel in 2011 which now feels like ages ago. I didn’t start making YouTube videos until 2012 and I was 14 years old at the time. It was very easy to get viral videos as long as you have a click-baity title. I created NBA basketball mixes of my favorite players and put some motivational music tracks in them. This was a great formula and people loved it! A lot of my videos consistently gained hundreds of thousands of views.
However, I didn’t realize that eventually YouTube would catch on and force me to take down all my videos. This was a very sad moment for me and all of my hard work was for nothing. I took a long hiatus on YouTube but eventually started again in 2014. This time making videos revolving around technology and once again I had a nice run! As you can see from my stats above, this one was even longer than the last. I eventually stopped making videos consistently and the views dipped down dramatically.
But with the knowledge and experience I have now, I’m going to show you how I’m gonna do it again with a different niche and how you can still make a run on YouTube as well.
#1 Research Your Audience And Don’t Stop
With the current YouTube algorithm, it is more important now than ever to know exactly what the audience of your niche want to see. No matter what type of content you make in any industry, research is the key to success. Consume all the popular content in your niche and find ways that you can create your own spin on it. Don’t be afraid to take inspiration from people that are successful because they also did the same thing. But there is a big difference between taking inspiration and just flat out copying. Google and YouTube are the biggest search engines in the world, so there is no reason why you can’t find out what you need to know.
But the research doesn’t stop there! In order to stay successful, you have to continue to learn and follow the trends. So stay up-to-date with everything that is going on in your niche. Doing my research helped me create videos that I know my target audience wanted to watch and stayed consistent along the way. Don’t get discouraged if something doesn’t work either. Just repeat the process and I know something will stick.
#2 Stay consistent and don’t worry about the numbers
Your stats will fluctuate often
This is probably the biggest reason people quit on YouTube in my opinion. I have seen talented content creators quit because they felt that there was too much competition or that no one was watching. Everyone starts somewhere and it took me about a year before anybody started watching my content. Imagine posting a video a week and the only views were you and your friends. This is the hurdle you have to jump over before you can reach success! Yes, there is a lot of competition now but there are countless number of content creators getting massive success and only started recently.
Graham Stephan is a personal finance YouTuber that has only started making videos since 2017. He had a very slow start as well and has only gained most of his following in the last year. He is now the #1 finance channel on YouTube and makes 1.5 million dollars a year through YouTube-related income. Not bad for someone that only started 3 years ago. Meanwhile, you have countless people complaining that it’s too late to start a channel or get success on social media. If you find yourself or someone else complaining…look him up! There are many more examples of people gaining massive success recently, he is not the only one.
Now that you have some motivation. Start creating content consistently and don’t give up. Most successful YouTubers say you should aim to make 1–2 videos a week to gain the most traction. But I’ve seen channels make way less than that and are still successful. So use your own discretion on how much you should be uploading. But stay consistent and create content you would want to watch.
#3 Quality Matters But Not As Much As I Thought
Some of my most popular videos were shot on my phone!
I was very worried about the quality of my videos especially at my peak. As time went on, I realized that the quality of the video and audio don’t matter as much as the quality of the actual content. The value that your content brings is the most important thing to focus on and most of the time people think it is the other way around. People want to have the highest end equipment but don’t focus on the depth and value that their content will bring. Some of the videos that I made on my phone with no professional equipment are my most popular videos.
I am constantly reminded by my audience and analytics that I need to focus on creating something that people want to watch and evokes some sort of emotion within them. At the end of the day, people are spending their precious time watching the things that you create, so you want to make sure that they are getting something out of it. Don’t focus on how nice your video looks because that will come with time. Try to tie in valuable lessons that your audience can takeaway from your content and everything else will fall into place.
#4 Let The YouTube Algorithm Judge Your Content
I know that we can very protective of the content that we make and we are quick to think that we make the best videos out there. This is a good thing because we should be confident in the content that we make but you have to stay objective. If you see that your content is not getting a lot of watch time or doesn’t have a high click through-rate than these are signs that you have to make changes.
Analytics and stats are your best friend when it comes to building your YouTube channel. The algorithm is built to put great content in front of the people that want to watch it. So if YouTube is consistently not putting your content in front of those people, take a step back. Look at other channels that are getting success and see what you can do to mimic what they do in your own way. I consume a lot of YouTube content to get inspiration for ideas I can do for my channel and it honestly has helped tremendously with the small success of my channel.
