7 Personal Branding MISTAKES to Avoid on LinkedIn

I've helped 26+ leaders to build their self reputation (personal brand) on LinkedIn who were facing any of these mentioned problems. Helped them to build good community, reputation and 2-5 extra leads per month.

Are you building your personal brand on LinkedIn?

Do any of these sound familiar?

  • 0-1 leads per month
  • Low conversion rates
  • Unanswered or ghosted cold DMs
  • 0-10 reactions on personal posts
  • Difficulty hiring good candidates
  • High engagement but few quality leads
  • Few profile visits from prospects
  • Most followers aren't your target audience
  • High engagement but stagnant follower count

Here are 7 Personal Branding Mistakes that Cause These Problems:

1. Teaching Others Before Showing Your Worth

People won't listen to your advice if they don’t know why they should.

Show your achievements and the story behind them.

Share testimonials that demonstrate the results of your advice.

2. Being Self-Obsessed

Personal branding should reflect your expertise and personality without being all about you.

Focus on helping your target audience achieve their goals.

Create content that guides them to success. From point A to B.

Point A [Pain] ---------------->--------------- Point B [Dream]

Find high- paying customers/clients desires, fratrations, hopes, challenges and needs.

If you get cheap leads from the posts, find and test real pain points of the targets.

You attract type of audience based on what you create online.

If you want leads, show your product and services as a solution to achieve their dream.

3. Inconsistent

All big industry influencer you see online have spend 2+ years to impress you and audience.

Personal branding takes commitment.

You can take small breaks but being consistently visible to targets makes you memorable.

Be consistent over a long period, think 3-5+ years, not 15-60 days!

If you are facing burnout, lack of motivation, work pressure, you can always hire social media manager/ virtual assistant to simplify work and maintain good image online.

4. Neglecting positioning

Don't rush into content creation without a strategy.

Define your target audience, mission, and vision first.

Position yourself clearly to solve their specific pain points.

Most of the E-commerce brands/ founders face problem of sales due to bad social media positioning. So have a clear positioning strategy.

Define your target audience, mission statement, and vision before publishing content.

I ask these 6 questions to my personal branding client to find strength:

1. Why do your target audience need your product or service?

2. Who among your targets can actually afford your offerings? (Remember, targeting everyone can lead to minimal earnings)

3. What made past clients choose you over others?

4. If you had just 2 hours to speak on any topic, what would it be and why?

5. How do you want people to perceive you?

(Think of your favorite actor, creator, or entrepreneur - what's the first trait that comes to mind? Example when I think of Mr. Ratan Tata ji / Mr. Beast, what first think I get in mind about their personality? Kind, & humble. Like that, how you want people to perceive you? )

6. What valuable lessons have you learned so far, and what led to those lessons? (Share your insights to inspire others!)

5. Creating broad, unfocused content

Being too broad can dilute your brand.

Taking about tools, podcasts, YT channels to watch, all these type of posts will not help you to get leads.

Base on content topic, you attract that type of audience.

Have a clear focus in your message and audience.

Don't worry about limiting your reach.

If you get leads but less engagement, don't take it to heart. You are on right path.

A specific, engaged audience is more valuable.

If you are getting less budget leads that means your content is attracting less income level targets.

Find real pain points of high paying prospects.

Always test the topic ideas that worked well for high charging competitor.

6. Sitting on the Fence

Don’t be afraid to have an opinion.

Taking a stand sparks conversation and attracts loyal supporters.

You don't need to be controversial, but you do need to be decisive.

7. Heading Mistakes

Your post's first 3 lines are crucial.

Avoid boring, lengthy, or irrelevant hooks.

Create a solid heading with:

  • Thought-provoking quote or statement
  • Visually appealing format (3 lines, 2 used)
  • Keep it short (under 10 words)

Grab attention, boost engagement!

Hey!! I am Anuja Deshpande a copy+ghostwriter and social media consultant.

I love to write and talk about strategic social media growth.

With my writing and LinkedIn strategy has helped:

  • A video marketing agency owner built authority, earned €7000+ in first 14 days, and featured on TV. Ranked Top 30% niche leader in Spain in 90 days.
  • An marketing agency owner got 39 leads and grew followers from 900 to 10,000 in 90 days.
  • A performance marketer got 2 leads within 48hrs
  • A co-founder got 2 leads in 24 hrs with just 1k followers.
  • An agency owner got 5 leads in 20 days without social proof. Had just 300 followers.

List will go on with my clients results....

Here's how I will help:

1) Storytelling Content creation to grab attention and build trust - ultimately inbound leads and target audience as followers. [Attract people to come to you rather than pitching them]

2) Engagement with right people - For visibility and community building. - Ultimately more engagement, wider network and referral opportunity.

3) Outbound lead generation -This is something I recently started to help clients get more leads. Here I sending personalised Dms to 100 people in a month. [Conversion is beyond my control.}

4) Profile optimisation - Posting & commenting is not enough to generate leads, when people takes interest they visit your profile. If your profile is NOT customer centric, SEO optimised and show your personality - You miss the lead generation. I take care of it.

5) Basic Graphic design - Designing your profile picture, banner & feature section strategically like an advertisement, and designing post carousel that follow brand identity. That I take care of.

6) Content curation - Are you active on other social media platform? I will repurpose other social media platform content. Content curation I do.

Above all things go hand in hand to grow on any social media platform.
