The 70-20-10 Model for Leadership Development

The 70-20-10 learning model is a widely recognized and highly effective approach to leadership development. This model is based on the principle that the best way to expand and develop is through a combination of hands-on experience, coaching, and formal learning.

In this article, I aspire to discuss how new and challenging experiences, developmental relationships, and formal knowledge, such as coursework, form a foundation for effective learning and transformational development.

The 70-20-10 learning model is based on the following breakdown:

  • 70% of learning comes from hands-on experience.
  • 20% of learning comes from coaching, feedback, and mentoring.
  • 10% of learning comes from formal training and education.

The reason this model is so effective for developing leaders is that it prioritizes experiential learning. Leaders learn best by doing, and the 70% of learning that comes from hands-on experience allows them to learn in a practical and immediate way. When leaders are given opportunities to take on new challenges, make decisions, and experience the consequences of those decisions, they develop critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and the confidence to lead.

The 20% of learning that comes from social and collaborative learning, coaching, feedback, and mentoring is equally important. Leaders need guidance and support to navigate the complexities of their roles, and coaching and mentoring provide the opportunity for leaders to learn from the experiences of others. This type of learning helps leaders gain new insights, develop their emotional intelligence, and learn how to communicate more effectively with their teams.

Finally, the 10% of learning that comes from formal training and education is important for providing leaders with the foundational knowledge and skills they need to succeed. Formal training can include courses, workshops, and conferences, as well as books and other resources. This type of learning is essential for helping leaders develop a solid understanding of leadership principles, theories, and best practices.

In conclusion, the 70-20-10 learning model is the best way to develop leaders because it prioritizes experiential learning, coaching and mentoring, and formal training and education. This model allows leaders to learn in a practical and immediate way, while also providing the guidance and support they need to navigate the complexities of their roles. By using this approach, organizations can develop leaders who are confident, capable, and effective in their roles, ultimately leading to greater success for the organization as a whole.
